Back in October 2022, ten months ago, I was overwhelmed with nerves, fear, and uncertainty about what lay ahead. I was about to commence my journey in Materials Science and Engineering as a first-year student. Immersing myself in the unfamiliar wasn’t exactly what my previously timid and reserved nature was used to. Looking back now, I recognize an entire academic year filled with personal development, challenges, and a great deal of enjoyment! But what insights has this year provided, and what is my current situation?

One of the first and most intimidating hurdles was forging friendships. This is undoubtedly a more challenging facet of entering university, and if you’re considering this as a future student, it might be one of your primary worries. On my initial day of moving into my accommodation, a few days ahead of term starting, I spent the whole day secluded in my room, too daunted to venture out and introduce myself to others. However, sitting here now, I can assert with confidence that I’ve made some of the best friends I’ve ever known at this university and in this program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and all it took was participating in casual conversations with others facing similar situations. So, what did I take away from this? I learned that taking a chance at the beginning of the year is always beneficial. If you don’t feel prepared or at ease, don’t fret! Numerous ice-breaker chances and events will help you meet others. I also realized that if you can embrace one thing, let it be your true self. With such a variety of individuals in the program and university, you’re sure to find kindred spirits.

Another obstacle was the volume of work and the complexity of the material. There was certainly an escalation from A-levels, and in many ways, a significant jump from the first term to the second. Being thrust into such an atmosphere isn’t always easy for your self-esteem; you may observe others studying and feel unworthy. A few strategies aided me in conquering that sensation, one being the reminder that we are all in this together. If you find something baffling, I can nearly guarantee that others share your confusion. So, don’t hesitate to ask for assistance. This may be the single most crucial lesson to learn during your first year. Seek guidance from your classmates and the faculty!

This leads me to my next point. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely desire your success and recognize that students face challenges. They are empathetic towards students and keep in touch with us throughout the year regarding our concerns. I didn’t fully utilize the support services until the year’s end, but I wish I had taken advantage of them earlier. I mentioned taking risks previously – I did take one at the beginning of the year by becoming a well-being representative for my year. This role enabled me to connect with the staff members, which is incredibly beneficial. There are numerous opportunities to familiarize yourself with the faculty, and it’s definitely one of the best things you can do for yourself! My key takeaway from this aspect of university life is to make the most of the assistance offered to you. You can never have too much help!

Overall, this year has shown me that feelings of anxiety, both leading up to and during university, are nearly always without basis and can be alleviated through the extensive support available from staff and fellow students. It has clarified that I am never isolated, and it has demonstrated how to enjoy myself even amidst pressures like exams and deadlines.
