Nearly ten months ago, in October 2022, I found myself anxious, frightened, and unsure about the future. I was preparing to embark on my journey in Materials Science and Engineering as a first-year student. Stepping into the unknown was not something my previously introverted and shy self was familiar with. Looking back, I recognize a year brimming with personal development, challenges, and plenty of enjoyment! But what lessons has this year imparted, and where do I stand now?

One of the initial and most intimidating obstacles I encountered was forging friendships. This is undoubtedly one of the more daunting facets of commencing university, and if you’re a prospective student reading this, it may be among your top worries. On my first day of moving into my lodging, a few days prior to the start of term, I spent the entire day sequestered in my room as I was too fearful to venture out and meet others. Yet, as I sit here today, I can assert with confidence that I’ve formed some of the greatest friendships I’ve ever had here at this university and within this program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, all beginning with engaging in casual conversations with others in similar circumstances. So, what did I discover? I realized that taking a risk early in the year is always beneficial. If you don’t feel prepared or at ease, don’t fret! There will be numerous ice-breaking opportunities and events to assist you in connecting with fellow students. I also learned that if you can embody one principle, it should be to be yourself. There is such a diverse range of individuals throughout the course and university; you’re sure to encounter people who resonate with you.

Another challenge I needed to surmount was the workload and complexity of the material. There was certainly a noticeable increase compared to A-levels, and in some aspects, an even greater leap from the first term to the second. Being immersed in such an environment can be daunting for your self-esteem; you may observe others studying and feel inadequate. Several factors aided me in overcoming that sentiment, one being the reminder that everyone shares your experience. If something is unclear to you, I can nearly promise there are a handful of others experiencing the same confusion. Therefore, don’t hesitate to seek assistance. This may be the most crucial lesson to grasp in your first year. Ask for support from your classmates and faculty!

This leads me to my next point. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely want you to succeed and are aware that students face challenges. They show empathy towards students and keep consistent communication with us throughout the year concerning our concerns. I didn’t fully utilize the pastoral support until the year was nearly over, but I wish I had engaged with it sooner. I spoke of taking risks at the beginning – I did take one by becoming a year well-being representative. This role allowed me to connect with the staff, which is incredibly beneficial. There are numerous ways to familiarize yourself with faculty, and doing so is undoubtedly one of the best decisions you can make for your own benefit! My primary takeaway from this aspect of university is to seize the assistance being offered to you. You can never have too much support!

Overall, this year has shown me that anxious feelings, both prior to and during university, are nearly always baseless and can be alleviated through the plethora of support options provided by faculty and fellow students. It has taught me that I’m never truly alone, and it’s shown me how to enjoy myself despite the pressures of exams and deadlines.
