Nearly ten months prior, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, trepidation, and uncertainty regarding the future. I was on the verge of commencing my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a first-year student. Venturing into the unfamiliar was not something my previously timid and reserved nature was used to. Looking back now, I recognize a year filled with personal development, obstacles, and a great deal of enjoyment! But what insights did this year offer, and what is my current position?
One of the foremost and most intimidating hurdles was forming friendships. This is frequently one of the most nerve-wracking facets of starting university, and if you’re reading this as a prospective student, it may be a considerable worry for you. On my initial day settling into my accommodation, merely days before the semester commenced, I spent the whole day concealed in my room, too daunted to venture out and meet others. However, reflecting today, I can assert with confidence that I’ve formed some of the finest friendships I’ve ever experienced, both at this university and within this program. I’ve discovered a second family here at Imperial, and it all began with some casual conversations with people in similar situations. So, what did I discover? I learned that taking a step forward at the start of the year is always advantageous. If you don’t feel entirely prepared or at ease, don’t be concerned! There will be countless ice-breaker occasions and events to facilitate your connection with others. I also found that if you can be anything, be authentic. With so many diverse individuals throughout the course and university, you’re sure to encounter like-minded people.
An additional challenge was handling the workload and the complexity of the material. There was indeed a noticeable increase from A-levels, and in some aspects, an even larger leap from the first term to the second. Being thrust into such an environment can be challenging for your confidence; you may observe others studying and feel inadequate. A few factors assisted me through that sensation, one being the reminder that everyone shares the same experience. If you struggle to grasp something, I can almost assure you that others are grappling with it too. So, do not hesitate to seek assistance. This might be the single most crucial lesson to learn in the freshman year. Reach out for help from your classmates and the faculty!
This leads me to my next point. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely want you to succeed and comprehend the challenges students encounter. They sympathize with students and maintain ongoing communication throughout the year regarding our concerns. I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support until the year’s end, but I wish I had done it sooner. I previously mentioned taking leaps – I did take one at the start of the year by becoming a year well-being representative. This position enabled me to connect with the faculty members, which is immensely beneficial. There are numerous ways to familiarize yourself with staff, and it’s undoubtedly one of the best actions you can take for yourself! My key takeaway from this aspect of university is to make the most of the assistance you’re given. You can never have too much!
Ultimately, this year has shown me that feelings of nervousness, both prior to and during university, are often baseless and can be mitigated by the various support avenues available from faculty and fellow students. It has taught me that I am never alone, and it has illustrated how to enjoy myself along with stressors like examinations and deadlines.
