Nearly a year ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty about what lay ahead. I was on the verge of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Embracing the unknown was not something my previously shy and reserved nature was used to. Looking back now, I recognize a year filled with personal development, obstacles, and abundant enjoyment! But what insights have I gained, and what is my current position?
One of the first and most intimidating hurdles was forming friendships. This is typically one of the most frightening elements of commencing university, and if you’re considering this path, it could be a significant worry. On my initial day of settling into my accommodation, a few days ahead of classes starting, I spent the whole day in my room, too apprehensive to go out and meet others. Today, however, I can proudly state that I’ve forged some of the closest friendships I’ve ever experienced here at university and in my program. I’ve found a new family at Imperial, and it all began with casual conversations with individuals in similar circumstances. So, what did I discover? I learned that taking a risk at the beginning of the year is always advantageous. If you’re not entirely prepared or at ease, don’t fret! There will be numerous ice-breaker chances and gatherings that will assist you in connecting with others. I also found out that if you can be anything, just be yourself. With such a diverse group of individuals in the course and university, you’re sure to encounter those who resonate with you.
An additional challenge was the volume of work and the complexity of the material. There was indeed a noticeable increase from A-levels, and in many respects, an even greater jump from the first term to the second. Being thrust into such an atmosphere can take a toll on your self-esteem; you might observe others studying and feel inferior. A few factors aided me in overcoming that sensation, one being the understanding that everyone is experiencing similar challenges. If you find something bewildering, I can almost assure you that others are too. Therefore, don’t hesitate to seek help. This may be the single most crucial lesson to grasp in the first year. Reach out for assistance from your classmates and the faculty!
This brings me to my subsequent point. The faculty in Materials is outstanding. They genuinely wish for your success and comprehend the difficulties students endure. They relate to us and maintain ongoing communication throughout the year regarding our concerns. I didn’t fully engage with the pastoral support until later in the year, but I regret not doing so sooner. I mentioned taking risks – I made one at the beginning of the year by becoming a wellbeing representative for my year. This position enabled me to establish relationships with the faculty, which is incredibly beneficial. There are numerous opportunities to connect with staff, and it’s one of the best decisions you can make for your own benefit! My primary takeaway from this aspect of university is to capitalize on the assistance available. You can never have too much!
Overall, this year has taught me that feelings of nervousness, both before and during university, are frequently unfounded and can be mitigated with the support options accessible from faculty and fellow students. It has taught me that I am never alone and how to find enjoyment amidst pressures like exams and deadlines.
