Authored by Dawson La, Master of Engineering in Materials Science and Engineering
Ten months prior, in October 2022, I was filled with anxiety and uncertainty about the future. I was starting my journey in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Stepping into the unfamiliar was not something my previously reserved self was used to. Looking back now, I recognize a year rich in personal development, obstacles, and plenty of enjoyment! So, what insights have I gained, and what is my current situation?
One of the first and most intimidating hurdles was forming friendships. This often ranks as one of the most frightening parts of beginning university, and if you’re an incoming student, it may be a concern for you. On my initial day moving into my housing, just days before classes commenced, I spent the whole day in my room, too fearful to step outside and interact with others. Today, I can proudly say that I’ve made some of the most incredible friends during my time at university and within my course. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial; it all began with casual conversations with individuals in similar situations. So, what did I realize? It’s beneficial to take a chance at the beginning of the year. If you’re not quite ready or at ease, that’s alright! There will be numerous ice-breaker activities to assist you in connecting with others. I also discovered that being authentic is essential. With such a variety of individuals throughout the course and the university, you’re sure to encounter others like yourself.
An additional challenge was the academic load and the complexity of the material. There was a significant transition from A-level studies, and an even more noticeable shift from the first to the second term. Being in such an atmosphere can take a toll on your self-confidence; you might observe others studying and question your own skills. What aided me was recalling that everyone is experiencing similar challenges. If you find something difficult to grasp, it’s likely that others do as well. So, don’t hesitate to seek assistance. This might just be the most crucial lesson from the first year. Ask for support from classmates and faculty!
This brings me to my subsequent point. The faculty in Materials Science are exceptional. They genuinely want you to thrive and appreciate the difficulties that students often encounter. They show understanding and maintain open lines of communication regarding our concerns. I didn’t fully take advantage of the support services until late in the year, but I wish I had done so earlier. I spoke about taking leaps before—I took one by becoming a well-being representative for my year. This position allowed me to connect with the faculty, which is invaluable. There are numerous ways to establish rapport with staff, and it’s one of the most beneficial things you can do for yourself! My key message is to make the most of the support that is available. You can never have too much help!
In summary, this year has taught me that anxious feelings, both prior to and during university, are often unjustified and can be alleviated with the support provided by staff and fellow students. It has revealed to me that I’m never isolated and how to find joy despite the pressures of exams and deadlines.
