Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with nerves, anxiety, and uncertainty about the future. I was on the verge of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Jumping into the unknown was not something my previously timid and quiet self was familiar with. Looking back now, I recognize a year filled with personal development, challenges, and a lot of enjoyment! But what insights have I gained this year, and what is my current situation?
One of the first and most intimidating hurdles was forming friendships. This is undoubtedly one of the most daunting aspects of beginning university, and if you’re reading this as an incoming student, it may be one of your greatest concerns. On my first day of moving into my dormitory, a few days ahead of the term start, I spent the whole day sequestered in my room, too apprehensive to step out and meet others. Today, however, I proudly affirm that I’ve forged some of the best friendships I’ve ever experienced at this university and in this program. I have discovered a second family at Imperial, all initiated by brief conversations with individuals in similar situations. So, what lesson did I gather? I realized that it’s crucial to take a chance at the beginning of the year. If you’re feeling unprepared or uneasy, don’t fret! There will be numerous ice-breaker events and gatherings to facilitate connections with others. I also recognized that if you can embody one quality, choose to be yourself. With such a diverse mix of people within the course and institution, you are sure to encounter others who resonate with you.
Another challenge was the intensity of the workload and the complexity of the material. There was certainly a shift from A-levels, and in some aspects, an even greater transition from the first term to the second. Being immersed in such an environment can be a test for your confidence; you might observe peers studying and feel less capable. A few factors assisted me through this sensation, one being the reminder that everyone shares similar experiences. If you’re struggling to grasp a concept, I can nearly assure you that there are many others who share that struggle too. So, don’t hesitate to seek help. This could be the most vital lesson to grasp in your first year. Reach out for assistance from both your classmates and the faculty!
This leads me to my next point. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely wish for your success and recognize that students face challenges. They show understanding towards students and keep in touch with us consistently throughout the year regarding our concerns. I didn’t fully utilize the pastoral support until the year’s conclusion, but I wish I had done so earlier. I mentioned earlier about taking leaps – I indeed took one at the year’s start by becoming a year well-being representative. This role enabled me to connect with the faculty, which is incredibly beneficial. There are numerous avenues to familiarize yourself with staff, and it’s unquestionably one of the best decisions you can make for yourself! My main takeaway from this aspect of university is to capitalize on the assistance available to you. You can never have an excess of support!
On a broader scale, this year has enlightened me that feelings of anxiety, both prior to and throughout university, are typically unfounded and can be eased by the various support resources provided by staff and fellow students. It has enlightened me that I am never truly alone, and it has taught me how to have fun while managing stressors such as exams and deadlines.
