Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was engulfed in anxiety, apprehension, and uncertainty regarding my future. I was on the verge of commencing my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a first-year student. Diving into the unfamiliar wasn’t something my previously timid and reserved self was used to. Looking back, I recognize a year of personal development, obstacles, and a great deal of enjoyment! But what insights have I gained this year, and what is my current standing?

One of the initial and most intimidating challenges was forming friendships. This is undoubtedly one of the more daunting facets of beginning university, and if you are reading this as an aspiring student, it may be one of your primary concerns. On my first day moving into my accommodation, a few days prior to the term starting, I spent the whole day tucked away in my room because I was too intimidated to venture out and greet others. However, as I sit here today, I can assert that I’ve established some of the finest friendships I’ve ever had, right here at this university and in this program. I’ve discovered a second family here at Imperial, and all it required was some light conversation with people in comparable predicaments. So, what have I learned? I learned that it’s always beneficial to take a leap of faith at the beginning of the year. If you don’t feel entirely prepared or at ease, fear not! There will be abundant opportunities for ice-breakers and events to assist you in connecting with others. I also discovered that if you can embody one thing, be true to yourself. There are numerous diverse individuals throughout the program and university; you’re bound to encounter people like you.

An additional obstacle was the volume of work and the complexity of the content. There was certainly a shift from A-levels, and in some respects, an even greater leap from the first term to the second. Being thrust into such an atmosphere isn’t always conducive to your confidence; you might observe others studying and feel inadequate. A few things helped me navigate that sentiment, one being the reminder that everyone is in the same situation. If you don’t grasp something, I can almost assure you that there are at least a few others who also don’t. So, seek assistance. This may be the most crucial lesson to learn in your first year. Don’t hesitate to ask for help from your peers and the faculty!

This leads me to my subsequent point. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely want you to prosper and understand that students face challenges. They empathize with students and maintain ongoing communication with us throughout the year regarding our concerns. I didn’t truly utilize the pastoral support until the end of the year, but I wish I had done so earlier. I previously mentioned taking leaps – I made one at the year’s start by becoming a year well-being representative. This role allowed me to connect with the staff members, which is incredibly beneficial. There are numerous ways to familiarize yourself with staff, and it’s undoubtedly one of the most advantageous things you can do for yourself! My primary takeaway from this facet of university is to make the most of the assistance being provided. You can never have an excess!

In a broader context, this year has enlightened me that anxious feelings, both prior to and during university, are nearly always unfounded and can be alleviated with the numerous support resources available from faculty and fellow students. It has taught me that I’m never solitary, and it has shown me how to find enjoyment amidst stressors like exams and deadlines.
