Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)

Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty about what lay ahead. I was on the brink of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a first-year student. Jumping into the unfamiliar was not something that my previously quiet and reserved self was used to. Looking back, I see a year filled with personal development, obstacles, and a lot of enjoyment! But what lessons has this year imparted, and where do I stand now?

One of the initial and most intimidating challenges I encountered was forging friendships. This is undoubtedly one of the more daunting elements of starting university, and if you’re reading this as a potential student, it may be one of your greatest worries. On my first day settling into my accommodation, a few days prior to the beginning of term, I spent the whole day secluded in my room, too daunted to venture out and meet others. Sitting here now, I can confidently assert that I’ve made some of the finest friends I’ve ever had, right here at this university and in this program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and all it required was engaging in casual conversations with individuals in similar situations. So, what did I discover? I realized that it’s always advantageous to take a leap at the beginning of the year. If you’re not feeling prepared or comfortable, don’t worry! There will be numerous ice-breaker chances and events to aid you in connecting with others. I also found that if you can embody one quality, be authentic. With such a diverse array of people within the course and university, you’re sure to find others like yourself.

Another obstacle I needed to navigate was the demanding workload and challenging content. There was definitely a transition from A-levels, and in some instances, an even greater leap from the first term to the second. Being thrust into such an environment can test your confidence; you might observe others studying and feel lacking. A few strategies helped me through that sensation, with one being the reminder that everyone is experiencing similar struggles. If you’re grappling with something, I can almost assure you that there are others who are also confused. Therefore, don’t hesitate to seek assistance. This may be the most crucial lesson to absorb in the first year. Reach out for help from your peers and the faculty!

This leads me to my subsequent point. The faculty in Materials are outstanding. They genuinely want you to thrive and recognize that students face difficulties. They connect with students and keep open lines of communication with us throughout the year regarding our challenges. I didn’t truly take advantage of the pastoral support until late in the year, but I wish I had done so earlier. I spoke earlier about taking leaps – I took one at the onset of the year by becoming a year well-being representative. This role enabled me to connect with the faculty, which is incredibly beneficial. There are numerous ways to become acquainted with faculty members, and it’s undoubtedly one of the best actions you can take for yourself! My primary lesson from this aspect of university life is to make the most of the support available. You can never have too much assistance!

In summary, this year has shown me that feelings of nervousness, both prior to and during university, are often unwarranted and can be mitigated by the various support resources available from staff and fellow students. It has taught me that I’m never alone and how to enjoy myself while managing stressors such as exams and deadlines.
