Ten months back, in October 2022, I found myself filled with anxiety and uncertainty about what lay ahead. I was on the verge of embarking on my journey in Materials Science and Engineering as a first-year student. Entering into the unknown was not something my formerly reserved self was familiar with. Looking back now, I see a year brimming with personal development, obstacles, and an abundance of enjoyment! But what insights have I gained, and what is my current position?
One of the first and most intimidating hurdles was forging friendships. This is frequently one of the most daunting elements of commencing university, and if you’re reading this as a future student, it may be one of your principal worries. On my inaugural day of moving into my residence, a few days prior to the commencement of classes, I remained in my room all day, feeling too daunted to venture out and meet others. Now, I can assert with confidence that I’ve cultivated some of the finest friendships I’ve ever known at this university and in this course. I’ve discovered a second family here at Imperial, and it all commenced with casual conversations with individuals in comparable situations. So, what did I learn? I realized that taking a step forward at the beginning of the year is always advantageous. If you’re not entirely prepared or at ease, don’t fret! There will be an abundance of ice-breaking opportunities and activities to assist you in connecting with others. I also discovered that if you can embrace one thing, it’s being your authentic self. With a diverse array of individuals across the course and university, you’re certain to encounter those who resonate with you.
Another obstacle was the intensity of the workload and the complexity of the material. There was undoubtedly a leap from A-levels, and in some respects, an even more significant leap from the first term to the second. Being in such an environment can be challenging for your self-esteem; you may observe others studying and feel inadequate. Several factors assisted me in overcoming that sensation, one being the reminder that everyone is in the same situation. If you don’t grasp a concept, I can nearly assure you that others are in the same boat. Therefore, seek assistance. This may be the most crucial lesson to embrace in your first year. Seek help from your classmates and the faculty!
This leads me to my next point. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely want you to thrive and understand that students face difficulties. They understand students’ challenges and maintain ongoing communication with us throughout the year about our concerns. I didn’t fully utilize the pastoral support until the year’s conclusion, but I wish I had started earlier. I mentioned taking risks – I did take one at the year’s start by becoming a year well-being representative. This role enabled me to connect with the faculty members, which is incredibly beneficial. There are numerous ways to familiarize yourself with the staff, and it’s undoubtedly one of the best choices you can make for yourself! My primary lesson from this aspect of university life is to seize the opportunities for assistance that you’re provided. You can never have too much support!
In general, this year has revealed to me that feelings of nervousness, both prior to and during university, are frequently unwarranted and can be eased with the support available from faculty and fellow students. It has taught me that I’m never alone and how to find joy despite challenges like examinations and deadlines.
