Nearly a year ago, in October 2022, I was feeling anxious, frightened, and uncertain about what lay ahead. I was on the verge of starting my journey in Materials Science and Engineering as a first-year student. Stepping into the unknown was far from what my previously shy and reserved self was used to. Reflecting on the past year, I recognize it as a time filled with personal growth, obstacles, and a lot of enjoyable moments! But what lessons have I gathered from this year, and where do I stand now?
One of the initial and most daunting challenges I encountered was making friends. This is undoubtedly one of the more intimidating elements of beginning university, and if you’re reading this as an incoming student, it may be one of your greatest concerns. On my first day moving into my residence, a few days prior to the semester starting, I spent the whole day concealed in my room because I felt too nervous to venture out and greet others. However, sitting here today, I can confidently assert that I’ve forged some of the greatest friendships I’ve ever experienced, right here at this university and in this program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and all it required was engaging in casual conversations with individuals in similar situations. So, what insight did I gain? I realized that it’s always beneficial to take a risk at the beginning of the year. If you don’t feel entirely prepared or at ease, don’t stress! There will be ample opportunities for ice-breakers and events that will assist you in connecting with others. I also learned that if you can embody one thing, it should be your authentic self. There are so many diverse individuals throughout the course and university; you will surely find like-minded people.
Another obstacle I had to navigate was the workload and the complexity of the content. There was undeniably a shift from A-levels, and in some ways, an even more significant leap from the first term to the second. Being immersed in such an environment can sometimes challenge your confidence; you might observe others studying and feel as though you’re not measuring up. A few strategies helped me overcome that sentiment, one being the reminder that everyone is in the same situation as you. If you’re struggling to grasp something, I can almost assure you that at least a handful of others are too. Therefore, seek assistance. This could be the most crucial lesson to grasp in your first year. Don’t hesitate to ask for help from your classmates and the faculty!
This leads me to my next point. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely want you to succeed and understand that students face difficulties. They connect with students and maintain ongoing communication regarding our challenges throughout the year. I didn’t fully utilize the pastoral support until late in the year, but I wish I had done so earlier. I mentioned earlier about taking risks – I did take one at the beginning of the year by becoming a year well-being representative. This role allowed me to build relationships with the faculty members, which is incredibly beneficial. There are numerous ways to familiarize yourself with the faculty, and it’s definitely one of the best choices you can make for yourself! My primary takeaway from this aspect of university is to leverage the assistance being offered. You can never have too much!
On a broader scale, this year has taught me that feelings of anxiety, both prior to and during university, are typically unfounded and can be alleviated through the numerous support resources available from faculty and fellow students. It has shown me that I am never isolated, and it has taught me how to savor my time despite stressors like exams and deadlines.
