By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)

Ten months back, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, apprehension, and uncertainty regarding what lay ahead. I was on the brink of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Venturing into the unfamiliar was not something my formerly timid and reserved self was used to. Looking back now, I realize a year filled with personal development, obstacles, and a lot of enjoyment! But what insights have I gained, and what is my current status?

One of the primary and most intimidating challenges was forming friendships. This is unquestionably one of the more daunting aspects of embarking on university, and if you’re an incoming student, it might be among your greatest concerns. On my first day moving into my residence, a few days prior to the beginning of classes, I spent the entire day secluding myself in my room, too daunted to venture out and socialize. Today, however, I can proudly declare that I’ve forged some of the closest friendships I’ve ever had, here at this university and within this program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all initiated with casual conversations with individuals in similar positions. So, what did I discover? I learned that it’s beneficial to take a chance at the beginning of the year. If you don’t feel prepared or at ease, don’t fret! There will be ample ice-breaker occasions and events to assist you in connecting with others. I also learned that if you can be anything, be authentic. There are so many diverse individuals across the program and university; you’re certain to encounter people who resonate with you.

Another obstacle was the academic workload and complexity of content. There was undoubtedly a progression from A-levels, and in certain aspects, an even greater leap from the first term to the second. Being placed in such a setting isn’t always easy for your self-confidence; you might observe others studying and feel inadequate. A few factors aided me in navigating that sensation, one being the reminder that everyone is in the same situation. If you don’t grasp something, I can nearly assure you there are others who also find it challenging. Therefore, seek assistance. This might be the single most crucial lesson to learn in the first year. Ask for help from your classmates and the faculty!

This leads me to my next point. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely desire for you to thrive and recognize that students face difficulties. They relate to students and keep consistent communication with us throughout the year regarding our challenges. I didn’t truly utilize the pastoral support until the end of the year, but I wish I had done so earlier. I mentioned taking risks earlier – I did take one at the beginning of the year by becoming a year well-being representative. This role allowed me to connect with the faculty, which is incredibly beneficial. There are numerous ways to engage with faculty, and it’s unquestionably one of the best actions you can take for yourself! My primary lesson from this facet of university is to leverage the support you’re provided. You can never have an excess of help!

In summary, this year has shown me that feelings of nervousness, both prior to and during university, are almost always baseless and can be mitigated by the numerous support options available from faculty and fellow students. It’s taught me that I’m never alone, and it’s taught me how to find enjoyment alongside stressors like exams and deadlines.
