Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was filled with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty regarding what lay ahead. I was on the brink of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Venturing into the unknown was not something my formerly shy and introverted self was used to. Looking back on the past year, I recognize a journey rich in personal development, obstacles, and a great deal of enjoyment! So, what insights have I gained, and what is my current state?

One of the first and most intimidating hurdles was making friends. This is frequently one of the most daunting elements of beginning university, and if you’re reading this as a future student, it may be a significant worry for you. On my first day of moving into my dormitory, a few days prior to the start of term, I spent the whole day sequestered in my room, feeling too anxious to step out and meet others. Nevertheless, today, I can confidently assert that I’ve formed some of the best friendships I’ve ever experienced, both at this university and within my course. I’ve discovered a second family here at Imperial, and it all commenced with light conversation with those in similar circumstances. So, what did I discover? It’s always advantageous to take a chance at the beginning of the year. If you’re not entirely prepared or comfortable, don’t fret! Numerous ice-breaker activities and events will be available to assist you in connecting with others. I also discovered that being true to yourself is essential. With such a diverse group of individuals across the course and university, you are sure to find those who resonate with you.

An additional challenge was the increased workload and the complexity of the material. There was certainly a noticeable elevation from A-levels, and in some aspects, an even greater jump from the first term to the second. Being thrown into such an atmosphere can pose challenges to your confidence; you may observe others studying and feel inferior. A few strategies helped me manage that sensation, one being the reminder that we’re all facing similar struggles. If you don’t grasp a concept, I can almost assure you that others are also finding it difficult. So, seek assistance. This may be the most vital lesson to internalize in the first year. Request help from your classmates and the faculty!

This leads me to my next point. The staff in Materials are exceptional. They are invested in your success and recognize that students encounter challenges. They show understanding and maintain ongoing communication throughout the year concerning our difficulties. I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support until the year was nearly over, but I wish I had done so earlier. I mentioned taking leaps earlier – I did take one at the beginning of the year by becoming a year well-being representative. This position allowed me to familiarize myself with the staff members, which is incredibly beneficial. There are numerous ways to connect with faculty, and it’s among the best things you can do for your own benefit! My primary lesson from this aspect of university is to capitalize on the assistance available. You can never have too much!

In summary, this year has revealed to me that feelings of nervousness, both before and during university, are frequently baseless and can be eased by the various support systems provided by faculty and fellow students. It has demonstrated that I am never alone and has taught me how to enjoy myself in spite of pressures such as exams and deadlines.
