Approximately ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, apprehension, and uncertainty regarding the future. I was on the brink of embarking on my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Venturing into the unknown was not something my previously shy and introverted self was accustomed to. Upon reflection, I now recognize a year filled with personal development, obstacles, and a great deal of enjoyment! But what insights has this year provided, and what is my current standing?

One of the first and most intimidating obstacles was forging friendships. This is frequently one of the most alarming aspects of commencing university, and if you are a prospective student, it may be a significant worry for you. On the inaugural day of moving into my accommodation, a few days ahead of the term’s commencement, I remained in my room all day, too daunted to venture out and meet others. However, today, I can assertively state that I have formed some of the most meaningful friendships here at the university and within my course. I have discovered a second family at Imperial, simply by initiating casual conversations with individuals in similar circumstances. So, what did I glean from this? I discovered that taking a daring step at the beginning of the year is always advantageous. If you don’t feel prepared or at ease, fret not! There will be countless opportunities and events to facilitate your connection with others. I also realized that being authentic is essential. With such a multitude of diverse individuals across the course and university, you’re sure to encounter like-minded peers.

Another hurdle was the volume of work and the complexity of the material. There was a distinct increase from A-levels, and an even greater jump from the first to the second term. Being thrust into such a demanding environment can take a toll on your confidence; you may observe others studying and feel inadequate in comparison. What aided me was the recognition that everyone is navigating the same experience. If something is unclear, I can almost assure you that others are facing the same dilemma. Therefore, do not hesitate to seek assistance. This could be the most vital lesson to grasp in the first year. Reach out to your classmates and the faculty!

This leads me to my subsequent point. The faculty in Materials are remarkable. They genuinely wish for your success and understand the challenges students encounter. They are sympathetic towards students and maintain ongoing communication throughout the year regarding our concerns. I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support until the end of the year, but I wish I had discovered it earlier. As I mentioned before, taking risks – I took one by becoming a year well-being representative. This position enabled me to connect with the faculty, which is invaluable. There are numerous ways to engage with the faculty, and it’s one of the best things you can do for your personal growth! My primary takeaway from this facet of university is to make the most of the available assistance. You can never have an excess!

In summary, this year has demonstrated to me that feelings of anxiety, both prior to and during university, are often baseless and can be mitigated by the various support resources provided by faculty and fellow students. It has taught me that I am never alone and how to have fun even amidst the pressures of exams and deadlines.
