Ten months prior, in October 2022, I found myself feeling anxious and uncertain about the future. I was on the verge of starting my journey in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Venturing into the unknown was something my once shy and reserved self wasn’t used to. Looking back now, I recognize a year filled with personal development, challenges, and a great deal of enjoyment! But what insights have I gained from this past year, and where do I stand now?
One of the foremost and most intimidating hurdles was forming friendships. This is undoubtedly one of the more daunting elements of beginning university, and if you’re reading this as a potential student, it might be among your primary worries. On my first day settling into my accommodation, a few days prior to classes commencing, I spent the whole day retreating in my room, too daunted to step out and introduce myself to others. However, today, I can proudly declare that I’ve forged some of the best friendships I’ve ever experienced, right here at this university and in this program. I’ve discovered a second family within Imperial, and it all initiated with casual conversations with individuals in similar situations. So, what did I take away from this? I discovered that taking a chance at the onset of the year is always advantageous. If you don’t feel entirely prepared or comfortable, don’t fret! There will be numerous ice-breaking chances and events to facilitate connections with others. I also realized that if you can embody one trait, be authentic. There exists such a diverse range of people in the program and the university; you are sure to encounter those who resonate with you.
Another obstacle was the workload and the complexity of the material. There was certainly a noticeable increase from A-levels, and in some respects, an even more significant jump from the first term to the second. Being immersed in such an environment can sometimes unsettle your confidence; you may observe your peers studying and feel inadequate. A few strategies helped me navigate through that sensation, one being the reminder that everyone shares the same experience. If there’s something you don’t grasp, I can nearly assure you there are others who are equally puzzled. Therefore, seek assistance. This could be the most crucial lesson to embrace during your first year. Don’t hesitate to ask for help from your fellow students and the faculty!
This leads me to my following point. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely want you to thrive and recognize that students face challenges. They relate to student experiences and keep ongoing communication with us throughout the year regarding our concerns. I didn’t utilize the pastoral support until the year’s end, but I wish I had started earlier. I spoke about taking chances at the beginning; I did take one by becoming a year well-being representative. This role enabled me to connect with the staff members, which is exceedingly beneficial. There are numerous opportunities to engage with faculty, and it’s certainly one of the finest decisions you can make for your own benefit! My primary takeaway regarding this facet of university life is to take full advantage of the support provided to you. You can never have too much help!
Overall, this year has enlightened me that feelings of nervousness, both prior to and during university, are often baseless and can be mitigated with the various support options accessible from staff and fellow students. It has taught me that I am never alone, and it has imparted the importance of enjoying myself amidst pressures like exams and deadlines.
