Approximately ten months ago, in October 2022, I felt anxious, fearful, and uncertain about the future. I was on the brink of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a first-year student. Venturing into the unfamiliar was not something my formerly shy and introverted self was accustomed to. Looking back now, I recognize a year filled with personal development, obstacles, and a lot of enjoyable moments! But what insights has this year provided me, and what is my current situation?

One of the initial and most intimidating challenges was the task of forging friendships. This is certainly one of the more frightening elements of beginning university, and if you’re reading this as a prospective student, it might be one of your top concerns. On my very first day moving into my residence, just a few days before classes commenced, I spent the entire day sequestered in my room because I was too apprehensive to venture out and meet others. Sitting here today, I can proudly assert that I’ve formed some of the most wonderful friendships I’ve ever had, here at this university and within this program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and all it required was initiating small conversations with individuals in similar positions. So, what did I glean from this experience? I discovered that it’s always beneficial to take a chance at the beginning of the year. If you don’t feel entirely prepared or at ease, don’t fret! There will be ample ice-breaker events and opportunities to encourage interaction with others. I also realized that if there’s one thing you can be, it’s yourself. With such a diverse range of individuals across the program and university, you will undoubtedly find like-minded people.

Another obstacle was the workload and difficulty of the material. There was certainly a transition from A-levels, and in some respects, an even more significant shift from the first term to the second. Being thrust into such an environment can be tough on your self-esteem; you might observe others studying and feel inadequate. A few strategies aided me in overcoming that feeling, one being the reminder that everyone is in the same situation as you. If you’re struggling to grasp something, I can nearly assure you that there are several others who are equally confused. Therefore, seek assistance. This may be the most vital lesson to learn in your first year. Don’t hesitate to ask your peers and the faculty for help!

This leads me to my next observation. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely want you to excel and recognize that students face challenges. They show empathy towards students and maintain ongoing communication with us throughout the year regarding our difficulties. I didn’t fully take advantage of the support services until the year’s end, but I wish I had sooner. I mentioned earlier about taking leaps – I did take one at the beginning of the year by becoming a year well-being representative. Holding this role allowed me to connect with faculty members, which is incredibly beneficial. There are numerous ways to become acquainted with staff, and it’s undoubtedly one of the most advantageous actions you can take for yourself! My primary takeaway concerning this aspect of university life is to leverage the support being offered to you. There’s no such thing as too much help!

Overall, this year has shown me that feelings of nervousness, both in anticipation of and during university, are nearly always unfounded and can be alleviated by the numerous support options available from faculty and fellow students. It has taught me that I am never alone, and it has shown me how to find enjoyment even amid stressors like exams and deadlines.
