Nearly a year ago, in October 2022, I felt nervous and uncertain about what lay ahead as I embarked on my Materials Science and Engineering degree as a freshman. Venturing into the unfamiliar was not something my previously timid self was used to. Looking back now, I recognize a year brimming with personal development, obstacles, and a lot of enjoyment! What insights have I gained, and what is my current state?
One of the initial and most intimidating hurdles was forging friendships. This often ranks as one of the most unsettling elements of beginning university, and if you are a prospective student, it may be a significant worry. On my first day of moving into my residence, just prior to the start of term, I remained in my room the entire day, too daunted to venture out and meet others. Now, I can proudly assert that I’ve formed some of the finest friendships here at university and within my program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, which all commenced with casual conversations with others in similar situations. What did I learn? It’s wise to take a chance at the beginning of the year. If you’re not prepared, don’t fret! There will be numerous ice-breaker activities to assist you in connecting with others. Moreover, if you can embody one thing, be your true self. With the diverse array of individuals throughout the course and university, you’re sure to discover like-minded peers.
Another obstacle was the sheer volume of work and difficulty of the material. There was undeniably a noticeable increase from A-levels, and an even more significant jump from the first term to the second. Being in such an environment can shake your self-confidence; you might observe others studying and feel inadequate. What aided me was the realization that everyone is experiencing the same situation. If you struggle with something, chances are others do as well. Therefore, don’t hesitate to ask for assistance. This might be the key lesson learned in the first year. Seek help from classmates and faculty!
This brings me to my subsequent point. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely want you to thrive and comprehend the challenges faced by students. They show understanding and maintain open communication concerning our concerns. I didn’t utilize the pastoral support until late in the year, but I wish I had taken advantage of it earlier. At the onset of the year, I bravely took on the role of a year wellbeing representative. This position enabled me to connect with the faculty, which is invaluable. There are numerous avenues to engage with staff, and it’s among the best choices you can make for yourself! My primary takeaway is to leverage the support available. You can never have an excess of assistance!
In summary, this year showed me that feelings of nervousness regarding university are often unfounded and can be eased with the support provided by staff and fellow students. It taught me that I’m never alone and how to find enjoyment despite the pressures of exams and deadlines.
