Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)

Ten months prior, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty about what lay ahead. I was on the verge of embarking on my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Venturing into the unfamiliar was not something my previously timid and reserved nature was used to. Looking back now, I recognize a year filled with personal development, challenges, and a great deal of enjoyment! So, what insights have I gained, and what is my current situation?

One of the first and most intimidating obstacles was forming friendships. This often ranks as one of the most daunting aspects of beginning university, and if you’re an incoming student, it could be a significant worry. On the day I moved into my accommodation, just days before classes commenced, I spent the entire time sequestered in my room, too frightened to venture out and meet others. Now, I can proudly state that I’ve forged some of the best friendships right here at this university and within this program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all initiated with casual conversations with others in similar situations. So, what did I learn? I discovered that taking a chance at the beginning of the year is always advantageous. If you’re not prepared or at ease, don’t fret! Numerous ice-breaking events will be available to facilitate connections with others. I also learned that being authentic is essential. With an array of diverse individuals across the program and university, you are sure to find those who connect with you.

An additional challenge was the workload and the intricacy of the subject matter. There was a clear transition from A-levels, and an even larger leap from the first to the second term. Being in such an atmosphere can be challenging for your self-esteem; you might observe your peers studying and feel inadequate. What assisted me was the reminder that everyone shares similar experiences. If something isn’t clear, rest assured that others feel the same way. So, don’t hesitate to ask for assistance. This could be the most vital skill to cultivate in your first year. Seek help from both classmates and faculty!

Speaking of faculty, the Materials department is exceptional. They genuinely want you to excel and comprehend the difficulties students encounter. They show understanding and maintain ongoing communication throughout the year about any challenges. I didn’t fully avail myself of the pastoral support until the end of the year, but I wish I had taken advantage of it sooner. As I mentioned taking chances earlier – I embraced one by becoming a well-being representative for the year. This position enabled me to engage with faculty, which is invaluable. There are numerous opportunities to connect with the staff, and it’s one of the best decisions you can make for yourself! My key takeaway is to leverage the assistance provided. There’s never such a thing as too much support!

Overall, this year has enlightened me that the anxious feelings before and during university are often unfounded and can be eased with the various support systems available from faculty and fellow students. It has illustrated to me that I am never alone and has taught me how to find joy even amidst pressures like exams and deadlines.
