By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)

Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty regarding what lay ahead. I was about to embark on my journey in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Stepping into the unfamiliar was not something my previously introverted and reserved nature was used to. Looking back, I recognize a year filled with personal development, hurdles, and plenty of enjoyment! But what insights did this year provide me, and what is my current state?

One of the first and most intimidating obstacles was forming friendships. This often ranks as one of the most daunting aspects of beginning university, and if you’re perusing this as a potential student, it may be one of your greatest concerns. On the day I moved into my residence, a few days before the semester commenced, I spent the whole day cloistered in my room, too apprehensive to venture out and mingle. Now, I’m proud to say I’ve forged some of the best friendships I’ve ever had, here at this institution and within this program. I’ve found a second family at Imperial, and it all initiated with light conversation with individuals in similar circumstances. So, what did I gather? I realized that taking a bold step at the beginning of the year is essential. If you’re not quite ready or at ease, no need to stress! There will be numerous ice-breaker activities and events to aid you in connecting with others. I also recognized that above all, you should be true to yourself. With a diverse array of individuals across the program and university, you are sure to encounter like-minded peers.

Another hurdle was the volume of work and the complexity of the material. There was undeniably a leap from A-levels, and in some respects, an even larger jump from the initial term to the subsequent one. Being immersed in such a setting can be challenging for your self-esteem; you might observe others studying and feel inferior. What supported me through this was the realization that everyone is experiencing similar struggles. If something perplexes you, I can nearly promise that others are facing the same issue. Therefore, seek assistance. This may be the most crucial lesson to absorb in your first year. Reach out for help from your classmates and faculty!

This leads me to my following point. The faculty in Materials is remarkable. They genuinely want you to excel and understand that students encounter difficulties. They show compassion and maintain open communication throughout the year regarding our challenges. I didn’t fully tap into the pastoral support until the year’s end, but I wish I had done so earlier. I brought up taking bold actions previously – I took one at the year’s outset by becoming a year well-being representative. This position enabled me to connect with the faculty, which is extremely beneficial. There are numerous avenues to engage with staff, and it undoubtedly ranks among the best decisions you can make for yourself! My main takeaway from this aspect of university is to leverage the available support. There’s no such thing as too much help!

In summary, this year has demonstrated to me that feelings of nervousness, both prior to and during university, are frequently unfounded and can be alleviated with the diverse support resources available from faculty and fellow students. It has shown me that I am never alone and how to find enjoyment amidst pressures such as exams and deadlines.
