Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, apprehension, and uncertainty regarding the future. I was on the verge of embarking on my journey in Materials Science and Engineering as a first-year student. Daring to step into the unfamiliar wasn’t something my once bashful and reserved nature was used to. Looking back now, I recognize a year filled with personal development, challenges, and fulfillment. But what insights have I gained, and what is my current position?

One of the primary and most intimidating hurdles was forging friendships. This aspect of starting university often stands out as one of the most daunting, and for prospective students, it may be a significant worry. On the first day of settling into my accommodation, a few days prior to classes commencing, I spent the whole day sequestered in my room, too daunted to venture out and introduce myself to others. However, today I can assertively say I’ve formed some of the best friendships I’ve ever had, both at this university and within my course. I’ve discovered a second family here at Imperial, all commencing with casual conversations with others in similar situations. So, what did I take away? I learned that taking a chance at the onset of the year can be extremely rewarding. If you’re feeling unprepared or uneasy, do not fret! Numerous ice-breaking events will assist you in connecting with your peers. I also understood that if you can be anything, be true to yourself. With such a diverse range of individuals throughout the course and university, you’re sure to find those who resonate with you.

Another significant challenge was dealing with the workload and the complexity of the material. There was undoubtedly a noticeable elevation from A-levels, and in certain aspects, an even greater leap from the first term to the second. Being immersed in such an environment can be tough on your confidence; you might observe others studying and feel out of place. A few strategies helped me navigate those feelings, one being the reminder that everyone faces the same circumstances. If you find something difficult to grasp, I can almost assure you there are others sharing your confusion. Therefore, don’t hesitate to seek assistance. This might be the most crucial lesson to grasp during your first year. Reach out for help from your peers and the staff!

This leads me to my subsequent point. The staff in the Materials department are exceptional. They are genuinely invested in your success and recognize that students face difficulties. They show compassion for students and maintain consistent communication with us throughout the year regarding our concerns. I didn’t fully utilize the pastoral support until the year’s end, but I wish I had taken advantage of it sooner. I mentioned previously taking leaps – I made one at the beginning of the year by becoming a year well-being representative. This position allowed me to connect with the staff members, which is incredibly beneficial. There are numerous opportunities to engage with staff, and it is undeniably one of the best actions you can take for your own benefit! My primary takeaway from this facet of university life is to capitalize on the assistance being provided to you. You can never receive too much!

In summary, this year has revealed to me that feelings of anxiety, both prior to and during university, are frequently baseless and can be mitigated with the support available from staff and fellow students. It has taught me that I am never alone and how to find joy in the midst of pressures such as exams and deadlines.
