Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)

Ten months prior, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty about what lay ahead. I was on the verge of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a first-year student. Venturing into the unfamiliar was not something my previously timid and withdrawn self was used to. Looking back now, I recognize a year filled with personal development, challenges, and plenty of enjoyment! But what have I gleaned this year, and what is my current standing?

One of the first and most intimidating hurdles was forming friendships. This is undoubtedly one of the more daunting parts of beginning university, and if you’re perusing this as a potential student, it may be one of your major worries. On my initial day moving into my residence, a few days ahead of classes starting, I spent the whole day sequestered in my room, too daunted to venture out and meet people. Sitting here now, I can assert that I’ve made some of the greatest friends I’ve ever had, here at this institution and in this program. I’ve developed a second family at Imperial, and it all commenced with a bit of casual conversation with people in the same boat. So, what did I discover? I found that making an effort to reach out at the beginning of the year is always advantageous. If you don’t feel prepared or at ease, fret not! There will be numerous ice-breaker chances and events to facilitate connections with others. I also learned that if you can embody one quality, be authentic. With such a diverse array of individuals in the course and university, you’re certain to come across those who resonate with you.

Another obstacle was the volume of work and the complexity of the material. There was undeniably a leap from A-levels, and in some respects, an even greater leap from the first semester to the second. Being immersed in such a rigorous environment isn’t always conducive to your confidence; seeing others study may induce feelings of inadequacy. A few strategies eased that feeling for me, one being the reassurance that everyone is navigating similar challenges. If something is unclear, I can almost assure you that there are others who also don’t grasp it. Therefore, don’t hesitate to seek assistance. This might be the single most vital lesson to learn in your first year. Reach out for help from your classmates and the faculty!

This leads me to my subsequent point. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely want you to thrive and recognize that students encounter difficulties. They are sympathetic to students and maintain regular communication with us throughout the year concerning our challenges. I didn’t fully utilize the pastoral support until the conclusion of the year, but I wish I had done so earlier. I mentioned taking risks previously – I did take one at the start of the year by serving as a well-being representative for my year. This role enabled me to connect with the staff members, which is immensely beneficial. There are numerous ways to familiarize yourself with faculty, and it’s certainly one of the best actions you can take for your own benefit! My primary lesson from this aspect of university is to capitalize on the support available to you. You can never have too much!

In a broader sense, this year has taught me that anxious feelings, both prior to and during university, are frequently unfounded and can be mitigated through the abundant support options provided by staff and fellow students. It has shown me that I’m never isolated, and it has taught me how to find enjoyment even amidst stressors like exams and deadlines.
