Ten months prior, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty about what lay ahead. I was about to embark on my journey in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Engaging with the unfamiliar wasn’t something my once shy and reserved self was used to. Looking back on the past academic year, I recognize a path of personal growth, obstacles, and a great deal of enjoyment! But what insights have I gained this year, and what is my current position?
One of the first and most intimidating hurdles was forming friendships. This is often a significant source of anxiety when starting university, and if you’re reading this as a prospective student, it may be a primary worry for you. On my initial day moving into my residence, just days before the semester kicked off, I spent the entire day sequestered in my room, too frightened to venture out and meet others. However, today I can proudly state that I’ve made some of the most wonderful friends I’ve ever encountered at this university and in this program. I’ve found a second family here at Imperial, and it all commenced with casual conversations with others in similar circumstances. So, what did I discover? I realized that taking a risk at the beginning of the year is always beneficial. If you’re not entirely ready or at ease, don’t stress! There will be numerous ice-breaking chances and events to facilitate connections with others. I also learned that if you have a choice, always be your true self. With such a diverse range of people across the course and campus, you are sure to find those who align with you.
An additional challenge was the volume of work and the complexity of the content. There was a clear escalation from A-levels, and in certain respects, an even greater jump from the first term to the second. Being placed in such an environment can be challenging to your self-esteem; you may observe others studying and feel inadequate. A few things supported me through that sensation, one being the acknowledgment that everyone is in the same situation. If something is unclear, I can almost assure you there are others who are also struggling. Therefore, ask for assistance. This may be the most crucial lesson of your first year. Seek help from your classmates and the faculty!
This leads me to the next point. The faculty in Materials are outstanding. They genuinely want you to thrive and recognize that students encounter challenges. They show empathy towards students and maintain open lines of communication throughout the year about our issues. I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support until late in the year, but I wish I had done so earlier. I spoke of taking risks before – I took one at the beginning of the year by becoming a well-being representative for my year. This role enabled me to connect with the faculty, which is immensely beneficial. There are numerous ways to engage with staff, and it’s one of the best decisions you can make for yourself! My primary lesson from this aspect of university is to leverage the assistance available. You can never have too much support!
In summary, this year has shown me that feelings of nervousness, both prior to and during university, are frequently unfounded and can be soothed through the various support resources offered by faculty and fellow students. It’s demonstrated to me that I’m never alone and how to find enjoyment amid stressors like exams and deadlines.
