Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty regarding the future. I was preparing to begin my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a newcomer. Venturing into the unfamiliar was not something my previously timid and reserved self was used to. Looking back, I see a year filled with personal development, obstacles, and a lot of enjoyment! But what did I gain from this year, and where do I stand now?

One of the first and most intimidating obstacles was forming friendships. This is undoubtedly one of the more daunting elements of starting university, and if you’re a new student reading this, it might be one of your top worries. On my first day settling into my accommodation, a few days before classes commenced, I spent the whole day confined to my room, too scared to step outside and meet others. However, as I sit here today, I can state with confidence that I’ve formed some of the best friendships I’ve ever had, here at this university and within this program. I’ve found a second family at Imperial, and it all began with engaging in small conversations with others in similar situations. So, what did I discover? I learned that it’s always advantageous to take the initiative at the start of the year. If you’re not quite ready or at ease, don’t fret! There will be plenty of ice-breaking opportunities and events to assist you in connecting with others. I also discovered that if you can be anything, be genuine. With so many diverse individuals throughout the program and university, you’re sure to connect with those who share your interests.

Another hurdle was the workload and the complexity of the topics. There was definitely a transition from A-levels, and in some respects, an even greater transition from the first term to the second. Being placed into such an environment isn’t always easy on your confidence; you might observe others studying and feel inadequate. A few things helped me navigate that sensation, one being the reminder that everyone is facing similar challenges. If you don’t grasp something, I can nearly guarantee that others are struggling too. So, seek assistance. This may be the most crucial skill to acquire in the first year. Reach out for support from your classmates and the faculty!

This leads me to my next point. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely wish for your success and recognize that students encounter difficulties. They relate to students and maintain ongoing communication with us throughout the year regarding our concerns. I didn’t fully utilize the pastoral support until late in the year, but I wish I had taken advantage of it earlier. I mentioned taking initiatives – I did take one at the year’s beginning by becoming a well-being representative. This role allowed me to connect with the faculty members, which is incredibly beneficial. There are numerous ways to engage with staff, and it’s certainly one of the most rewarding things you can do for yourself! My key takeaway from this aspect of university is to make the most of the assistance available to you. You can never have too much!

In conclusion, this year has taught me that feelings of anxiety, both prior to and while at university, are frequently unfounded and can be eased with the various support resources provided by faculty and fellow students. It has taught me that I’m never alone, and it has shown me how to find enjoyment amidst stressors like exams and deadlines.
