Ten months back, in October 2022, I felt nervous and unsure about what lay ahead. I was on the verge of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Venturing into the unfamiliar was not what my previously timid and reserved self was used to. Looking back now, I recognize a year rich in personal development, obstacles, and abundant enjoyment. But what have I discovered, and where do I stand now?
One of the first and most intimidating hurdles was forming friendships. This aspect is often among the most daunting when starting university, and if you’re an incoming student, it might be one of your primary worries. On my initial day settling into my accommodation, a few days prior to classes commencing, I remained in my room the entire time, feeling too apprehensive to venture out and meet new people. Now, I can assuredly say that I’ve befriended some of the most remarkable individuals I’ve encountered at this university and in this program. I’ve discovered a second family here at Imperial, all starting with engaging in casual conversations with peers in similar circumstances. So, what did I understand? I learned that it’s crucial to make a bold move at the beginning of the year. If you don’t feel prepared or at ease, it’s okay! There will be numerous ice-breaking chances and events designed to facilitate connections. I also learned that if there’s one thing to be, it’s yourself. With such a diverse range of individuals across the program and university, you’re bound to find others like you.
Another obstacle was the workload and level of content complexity. There was definitely a noticeable increase from A-levels, and in some aspects, an even larger jump from the first term to the second. Being in such an environment can be tough on your self-esteem; you might observe others studying and feel inadequate. A few strategies helped me navigate that sensation, one being the reminder that everyone is experiencing similar challenges. If you don’t grasp something, I can nearly assure you that others are struggling too. Therefore, seek assistance. This might be the single most crucial lesson to learn in the freshman year. Seek help from your classmates and faculty!
This leads me to my subsequent point. The faculty in Materials are outstanding. They genuinely want you to thrive and recognize that students face challenges. They connect with students and maintain open communication throughout the year regarding our concerns. I didn’t truly utilize the pastoral support until the year’s end, but I wish I had done so earlier. I spoke about taking bold steps at the beginning; I did take one by becoming a year well-being representative. This role enabled me to connect with the faculty, which is extremely beneficial. There are many opportunities to engage with faculty, and it’s certainly among the best actions you can take for yourself! My primary takeaway from this aspect of university is to fully utilize the assistance available. You can never have an excess of support!
Overall, this year has shown me that feelings of anxiety, both prior to and during university, are often baseless and can be alleviated through the support systems provided by faculty and fellow students. It has taught me that I’m never isolated and how to relish my time while managing pressures like examinations and deadlines.
