Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)

Nearly a year ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty regarding the future. I was on the brink of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Venturing into the unknown was not something my formerly shy and reserved nature was used to. Looking back on the previous academic year, I realize it has been a journey of personal development, obstacles, and a lot of enjoyment! But what insights have I gained, and what is my current status?

One of the early and most intimidating hurdles was forming friendships. This is frequently one of the most nerve-wracking parts of beginning university, and if you’re a prospective student, it could be one of your top concerns. On my first day moving into my dorm, just days before classes commenced, I spent the whole day secluded in my room, too scared to venture out and meet people. Now, I’m pleased to say I’ve established some of the best friendships at this university and within this program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it only required some casual conversation with others in the same boat. So, what did I realize? I discovered that taking a risk at the year’s outset is always advantageous. If you don’t feel ready or at ease, don’t fret! There will be numerous ice-breaker activities and events to aid in connecting with others. I also learned that being true to yourself is essential. With such a diverse group of people in the program and university, you are sure to find others who share your interests.

Another difficulty was managing the workload and the challenging material. There was a clear leap from A-levels, and in some respects, an even greater jump from the first semester to the second. Being in a demanding environment can challenge your self-esteem; seeing others study might leave you feeling inadequate. A few things supported me during that phase, one being the realization that everyone is experiencing the same struggles. If you find something confusing, I can almost assure you that others are also having difficulties. So, don’t hesitate to seek help. This might be the most crucial lesson to grasp in your first year. Reach out to your classmates and the faculty for assistance!

This leads me to my next point. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They are committed to your success and recognize that students encounter difficulties. They show empathy and keep open lines of communication throughout the year about our concerns. I didn’t take full advantage of the pastoral support until late in the year, but I wish I had accessed it earlier. I mentioned taking risks before – I took one at the beginning of the year by volunteering as a year well-being representative. This role helped me connect with the staff, which is incredibly beneficial. There are numerous ways to engage with faculty, and it’s one of the best choices you can make for yourself! My main takeaway from this aspect of university life is to utilize the resources available. You can never have too much support!

In summary, this year has shown me that feelings of anxiety, both before and during university, are often misplaced and can be eased with the various support resources available from staff and fellow students. It has taught me that I’m never alone and how to find enjoyment even amidst pressures like exams and deadlines.
