Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)

Ten months prior, in October 2022, I felt anxious, fearful, and uncertain about what lay ahead. I was on the brink of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Venturing into the unknown was not something my previously timid and introverted self was familiar with. Looking back on the past year, I recognize a journey filled with personal development, obstacles, and a significant amount of enjoyment! But what insights have I gained, and what is my current position?

One of the first and most intimidating hurdles was forging friendships. This often stands out as one of the most daunting aspects of beginning university, and if you’re an incoming student, it may be a major concern for you. On my initial day of moving into my residence, a few days prior to the start of classes, I spent the entire day concealed in my room, too apprehensive to venture out and introduce myself to others. However, today I could confidently declare that I’ve cultivated some of the finest friendships I’ve ever experienced, both at this university and within this course. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all commenced with casual conversations with individuals in comparable situations. So, what did I discover? I realized that it’s always advantageous to take a risk at the beginning of the year. If you don’t feel prepared or at ease, don’t fret! There will be an abundance of ice-breaker chances and events to facilitate your connection with others. I also found that if you can be anything, be true to yourself. With such a diverse range of individuals across the course and university, you’re bound to encounter others like you.

Another obstacle was the volume of work and difficulty of the content. There was certainly an elevation from A-levels, and in some respects, an even greater leap from the first term to the second. Being placed in such an atmosphere isn’t always simple for your self-esteem; you might observe others studying and feel inadequate. A few strategies helped me navigate that feeling, one being the reminder that everyone is navigating the same challenges. If you don’t grasp something, I can almost assure you that there are others who also don’t understand. Therefore, seek assistance. This may be the most crucial lesson to learn in the first year. Reach out for help from your colleagues and the faculty!

This leads me to my next point. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely want you to thrive and recognize that students encounter difficulties. They show compassion towards students and maintain ongoing communication with us throughout the year concerning our challenges. I didn’t fully leverage the pastoral support until the year’s end, but I wish I had done so earlier. I mentioned before about taking risks – I took one at the year’s inception by becoming a well-being representative for my year. This position helped me connect with the faculty members, which is exceptionally beneficial. There are numerous ways to familiarize yourself with the faculty, and it’s undoubtedly one of the best actions you can take for yourself! My primary insight from this aspect of university life is to capitalize on the assistance you’re provided. There is no such thing as too much help!

Overall, this year has shown me that feelings of nervousness, both prior to and during university, are frequently baseless and can be alleviated through the various support systems available from faculty and fellow students. It has taught me that I am never alone and how to find enjoyment even amidst pressures such as exams and deadlines.
