Ten months prior, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty about what lay ahead. I was on the verge of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Venturing into the unfamiliar was not something my previously introverted and quiet self was used to. Reflecting on the past year, I see a period abundant in personal development, obstacles, and great enjoyment! But what has this year revealed to me, and what is my current standing?
One of the first and most intimidating hurdles was making new friends. This can often be one of the most frightening parts of beginning university, and if you’re an incoming student, it could be your greatest concern. On my initial day of moving into my dormitory, a few days ahead of the semester starting, I spent the whole day sequestered in my room, too daunted to venture out and introduce myself. Yet now, I can affirm with confidence that I’ve forged some of the finest friendships at university and within my program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and all it required was engaging in some small talk with others in similar circumstances. So, what did I come to understand? I realized that taking risks at the beginning of the year is always advantageous. If you feel unprepared or uneasy, don’t fret! There will be an abundance of ice-breaker activities to assist you in connecting with others. I also found that being genuine is crucial. With such a diverse array of individuals across the program and university, you’re sure to find those who resonate with you.
Another significant challenge was the volume of workload and the complexity of the material. There was a distinct transition from A-levels, and in some respects, an even greater shift from the first term to the second. Being thrown into such a scenario can be detrimental to your confidence; you might observe others studying and feel as though you don’t measure up. A few elements aided me through this, one being the reminder that everyone is in a similar situation. If you don’t comprehend something, I can nearly assure you that others don’t either. Therefore, don’t hesitate to seek assistance. This could be the most crucial lesson to grasp in the first year. Request help from classmates and faculty!
This leads me to my subsequent point. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely desire your success and recognize the challenges students encounter. They express empathy and maintain ongoing communication throughout the year regarding our concerns. I didn’t take advantage of the pastoral support until the year’s end, but I wish I had utilized it earlier. I mentioned taking risks – I embraced one at the year’s start by becoming a well-being representative. This position enabled me to familiarize myself with the faculty, which is immensely beneficial. There are numerous ways to engage with staff, and it’s one of the best actions you can take for yourself! My primary takeaway from this facet of university life is to capitalize on the assistance provided. You can never obtain too much!
Ultimately, this year has enlightened me that anxious feelings, both prior to and during university, are frequently unwarranted and can be mitigated with the available support from staff and fellow students. It has taught me that I am never alone and how to find joy in spite of pressures like exams and deadlines.
