Nearly a year ago, in October 2022, I felt anxious, fearful, and uncertain about what lay ahead. I was about to commence my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Venturing into the unknown wasn’t something my previously shy and reserved self was familiar with. Looking back over the past year, I recognize it as a time filled with personal development, challenges, and plenty of enjoyment! So, what insights have I gained, and what is my current standing?

One of the first and most intimidating hurdles was forging friendships. This is undoubtedly one of the more daunting facets of embarking on university life, and if you’re an incoming student, it may be among your chief worries. On my initial day of moving into my accommodation, a few days prior to the term’s commencement, I spent the whole day sequestered in my room because I felt too daunted to step out and introduce myself to others. Yet, as I sit here today, I can assertively say that I’ve formed some of the finest friendships I’ve ever experienced at this university and in this program. I’ve discovered a second family here at Imperial, and it all ignited with engaging in casual conversation with others in similar circumstances. So, what have I learned? I’ve learned that it’s always beneficial to take a chance at the beginning of the year. If you don’t feel entirely prepared or at ease, don’t fret! There will be numerous ice-breaker events and opportunities to help you bond with others. I also discovered that if you can embrace one thing, it’s being yourself. There is such a diverse range of people across the program and university; you’re sure to encounter individuals like you.

Another challenge was the intensity of the workload and the complexity of the material. There was certainly a leap from A-levels, and in many respects, an even larger jump from the first term to the second. Being thrust into such an environment isn’t always easy for your self-esteem; witnessing others studying might make you feel inadequate. A few strategies assisted me through that sensation, one being the reminder that everyone is navigating the same challenges as you. If you’re having trouble grasping something, I can almost assure you that there are at least several others who don’t understand it either. So, seek assistance. This might be the most critical lesson to learn in your first year. Request help from your peers and the faculty!

This leads me to my next observation. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They truly want you to excel and recognize that students face difficulties. They show understanding towards students and keep the lines of communication open throughout the year regarding our concerns. I didn’t fully utilize the support services until the year’s end, but I wish I had taken advantage of them earlier. I previously mentioned taking chances – I took one at the year’s start by becoming a year well-being representative. This role allowed me to get acquainted with the staff members, which is remarkably beneficial. There are many avenues to connect with faculty, and it is undoubtedly one of the most advantageous actions you can take for yourself! My primary takeaway from this aspect of university life is to make the most of the assistance available to you. You can never have too much support!

Overall, this year has taught me that anxious feelings, both prior to and during university life, are typically unfounded and can be mitigated by the plethora of support options from staff and fellow students. It has shown me that I’m never truly alone, and it has helped me learn to enjoy myself even amidst stressors like exams and deadlines.
