Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)

Ten months prior, in October 2022, I experienced overwhelming nerves, fear, and uncertainty about the future. I was on the brink of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a first-year student. Venturing into the unknown was not something my previously shy and reserved self was used to. Reflecting now, I recognize a year filled with personal development, challenges, and enjoyment! But what insights have I gained, and what is my current status?

One of the first and most intimidating obstacles was forming friendships. This is frequently one of the most frightening aspects of beginning university, and if you’re reading this as a possible student, it may be a significant worry for you. On my first day of moving into my accommodation, a few days before classes commenced, I spent the entire day in my room, too anxious to go out and meet others. Today, however, I can proudly say I’ve made some of my best friends here at the university and in my program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all began with casual conversations with others in similar situations. So, what did I take away from this? I realized that it’s best to make a bold move at the start of the year. If you’re not entirely prepared or at ease, don’t fret! There will be numerous ice-breaker events designed to help you connect with others. I also discovered that authenticity is essential. With such a diverse array of individuals in the program and university, you’re sure to find others who resonate with you.

Another hurdle was the workload and the complexity of the content. There was undoubtedly a leap from A-levels, and in some respects, an even greater transition from the first term to the second. Being in such a setting can undermine your confidence; you may observe your peers studying and feel inadequate. A few strategies helped me navigate this, one being the reminder that everyone is experiencing similar challenges. If something is unclear to you, I can almost assure you that others are struggling too. So, seek assistance. This might be the most essential lesson to learn in your first year. Don’t hesitate to reach out to peers and faculty!

This brings me to my next observation. The staff in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely desire for you to succeed and understand the difficulties students encounter. They empathize with us and actively communicate about our concerns. I didn’t fully take advantage of pastoral support until the end of the year, but I wish I had done so earlier. I mentioned taking leaps previously – I took one by becoming a well-being representative for my year. This position allowed me to familiarize myself with the staff, which has been invaluable. There are various ways to engage with staff, and it’s one of the best choices you can make for yourself! My main takeaway is to fully utilize the assistance available. You can never have too much!

In conclusion, this year has taught me that feelings of anxiety, both before and during university, are often unfounded and can be alleviated through the support provided by staff and fellow students. It has demonstrated that I am never alone and has shown me how to find enjoyment despite stressors such as exams and due dates.
