By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)

Back in October 2022, ten months ago, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty about what lay ahead. I was about to begin my journey in Materials Science and Engineering as a first-year student. Venturing into the unknown was not something my previously introverted and reserved self was used to. Looking back now, I recognize a year filled with personal development, challenges, and plenty of enjoyment! So, what insights have I gained this year, and where do I stand now?

One of the initial and most intimidating hurdles was making connections. This is undoubtedly one of the more frightening aspects of commencing university, and if you are a potential student reading this, it may be among your greatest concerns. On my first day moving into my accommodation, a few days ahead of the term starting, I spent the whole day sequestered in my room, far too intimidated to venture out and introduce myself to anyone. However, today I can confidently assert that I have forged some of the best friendships during my time at this university and in this program. I have discovered a second family here at Imperial, and it all kicked off with light conversations with others in similar situations. So, what did I gain from this experience? I learned that taking a leap at the start of the year is the best approach. If you’re not feeling ready or at ease, don’t fret! There will be numerous ice-breaking events to facilitate connections. I also discovered that if you can be anything, just be yourself. With such a diverse array of people in the course and university, you’re sure to encounter like-minded individuals.

Another obstacle was the volume of work and the challenge of the content. There was undeniably a leap from A-levels, and in some respects, a larger leap from the first term to the second. Being immersed in such an environment can be a blow to your self-esteem; you might observe others studying and feel inadequate. A few strategies aided me in overcoming that sensation, one being the reminder that everyone is navigating the same challenges. If something doesn’t make sense to you, I can almost guarantee that there are others who share your confusion. So, don’t hesitate to seek assistance. This might be the most crucial lesson to absorb in your first year. Reach out for help from your peers and the faculty!

This leads me to my next point. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely want you to thrive and recognize that students encounter difficulties. They empathize with students and maintain ongoing communication throughout the year regarding our challenges. I didn’t fully utilize the pastoral support until the end of the year, but I wish I had sought it out earlier. I referenced taking leaps earlier – I did take one at the beginning of the year by becoming a year well-being representative. This position enabled me to get acquainted with the faculty, which is incredibly beneficial. There are numerous ways to connect with staff, and it’s one of the best things you can do for yourself! My main conclusion from this facet of university is to capitalize on the assistance available. You can never have too much support!

In summary, this year has taught me that feelings of nervousness, both prior to and during university, are often unfounded and can be eased by the countless support resources available from staff and fellow students. It has taught me that I am never alone and how to find enjoyment even amidst pressures such as exams and deadlines.
