Ten months back, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty about what lay ahead. I was on the verge of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Embracing the unfamiliar was not something my previously shy and introverted self was used to. Looking back now, I recognize a year filled with personal development, challenges, and a lot of enjoyment! But what did this year convey to me, and where do I find myself now?
One of the primary and most intimidating hurdles was forging friendships. This is frequently one of the most daunting aspects of commencing university, and if you’re an incoming student, it may be a significant concern. On my first day of moving into my residence, a few days prior to the beginning of classes, I spent the whole day tucked away in my room, too scared to venture out and meet others. Today, I can confidently affirm that I’ve formed some of the best friendships here at this university and within this program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all initiated with casual conversations with those in similar situations. So, what did I discover? I learned that taking a risk at the start of the year is always beneficial. If you’re feeling unprepared or uneasy, don’t fret! There are numerous opportunities for ice-breaking and events to facilitate connections with others. I also realized that if you can be anything, be authentic. With such a diverse range of individuals throughout the course and university, you’re bound to encounter like-minded people.
Another challenge was the volume and complexity of the coursework. There was certainly a noticeable increase from A-levels, and in some respects, an even larger jump from the first term to the second. Being thrust into such an atmosphere isn’t always easy for your self-esteem; it’s possible to observe others studying and feel insufficient. A few strategies helped me navigate that feeling, one being the acknowledgment that everyone is facing similar challenges. If you find something confusing, I can almost assure you that others do too. So, don’t hesitate to seek assistance. This may be the most crucial lesson to grasp in your first year. Request help from your classmates and the faculty!
This leads me to my next point. The faculty in Materials is exceptional. They genuinely want you to succeed and recognize that students may struggle. They empathize with us and maintain continuous communication throughout the year regarding our concerns. I didn’t really utilize the pastoral support until the end of the year, but I wish I had done so earlier. I mentioned taking risks previously – I did take one at the start of the year by becoming a year well-being representative. This position enabled me to connect with the staff members, which is immensely beneficial. There are several methods to interact with faculty, and it’s undoubtedly one of the best things you can do for yourself! My primary takeaway from this aspect of university is to seize the support you’re provided. You can never have too much!
In summary, this year has imparted to me that anxious feelings, both prior to and during university, are often baseless and can be eased with the various support systems available from faculty and fellow students. It has taught me that I am never alone, and it has guided me on how to enjoy my time despite stressors like exams and deadlines.
