Ten months back, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, trepidation, and uncertainty regarding what lay ahead. I was on the verge of beginning my journey in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Entering uncharted territory was not something my formerly introverted and quiet self was familiar with. Looking back now, I perceive a year abundant with personal development, obstacles, and a great deal of enjoyment! But what insights did this year impart to me, and what is my current position?
One of the first and most intimidating hurdles was forging friendships. This is frequently one of the most daunting aspects of initiating university life, and if you’re an incoming student, it might weigh heavily on your mind. On my inaugural day settling into my residence, merely days prior to the semester’s commencement, I spent the whole day concealed in my room, too daunted to venture out and meet others. Today, however, I can assert with confidence that I’ve developed some of the strongest friendships I’ve ever formed, both at this institution and within my program. I’ve discovered a second family here at Imperial, and it all began with a little small talk with others in comparable situations. So, what did I discover? I learned that it’s advantageous to take a risk at the beginning of the year. If you’re not feeling prepared or at ease, don’t fret! There will be ample ice-breaker events and opportunities to help you connect with others. I also realized that if you can embody one thing, be authentic. With so many diverse individuals across the course and university, you are certain to find those who connect with you.
Another challenge arose from the workload and the intricacy of the material. There was indeed a transition from A-levels, and in some respects, an even steeper ascent from the first term to the second. Being propelled into such an environment can be taxing on your self-assurance; you might observe your peers studying and feel inadequate in comparison. A few strategies helped me navigate that feeling, one being the reminder that everyone is encountering similar challenges. If you don’t grasp a concept, I can nearly assure you there are others who don’t either. Therefore, seek assistance. This could be the single most vital lesson to grasp in your first year. Reach out to your classmates and the faculty!
This brings me to my next point. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely wish for your success and comprehend the difficulties students encounter. They empathize with us and keep open lines of communication throughout the year regarding our concerns. I didn’t really utilize the pastoral support until the year’s conclusion, but I regret not doing so earlier. I mentioned taking risks previously – I embarked on one at the year’s outset by becoming a year well-being representative. This position enabled me to establish connections with the faculty members, which is tremendously beneficial. There are numerous avenues to engage with faculty, and it’s one of the best actions you can take for yourself! My primary takeaway from this aspect of university life is to make the most of the assistance provided. You can never have too much!
In sum, this year has illuminated the fact that feelings of apprehension, both before and during university, are frequently unfounded and can be eased through the various support mechanisms available from staff and fellow students. It has demonstrated to me that I am never alone and has taught me how to find joy alongside the pressures of exams and deadlines.
