Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty about what lay ahead. I was on the brink of commencing my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Venturing into the unknown was not something my previously timid and reserved nature was familiar with. Looking back on the past academic year, I recognize a path of personal growth, hurdles, and a great deal of enjoyment! But what insights have I gained, and what is my current status?

One of the initial and most intimidating challenges was forming friendships. This is frequently one of the most daunting facets of beginning university, and if you are an incoming student, it might be one of your principal concerns. On my first day settling into my residence, several days prior to the start of classes, I spent the entire day sequestered in my room, too daunted to venture out and meet others. Now, I can proudly state that I’ve established some of the finest friendships at the university and within my program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all commenced with casual conversations with individuals in comparable situations. What have I taken away? It’s advantageous to take a risk at the commencement of the year. If you’re not prepared or at ease, don’t fret! Numerous ice-breaker activities will be available to assist you in connecting with others. Additionally, if you can embody one trait, be authentic. With such a diverse group of people across the program and university, you are sure to find those who share your interests.

Another hurdle was the volume of work and the complexity of the material. There was a clear leap from A-levels, and in certain respects, an even greater leap from the first to the second term. Being in such a setting can be challenging on your self-esteem; you might observe others studying and feel inadequate. What aided me was reminding myself that everyone is facing the same challenges. If you’re struggling with a topic, it’s likely that others are too. Thus, seek assistance. This could be the most crucial lesson from the first year. Reach out for help from both peers and faculty!

This leads me to my next point. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely want you to excel and recognize the challenges that students encounter. They resonate with our experiences and maintain open lines of communication throughout the year regarding our worries. I didn’t fully leverage the pastoral support until the year’s end, but I wish I had done so earlier. I mentioned taking risks before – I took one by becoming a student well-being representative. This position enabled me to connect with the faculty, which is immensely beneficial. There are numerous ways to engage with staff, and it’s one of the most favorable actions you can take for yourself! My primary lesson is to capitalize on the support provided. You can never have too much!

In summary, this year has shown me that feelings of anxiety, both before and during university, are often baseless and can be mitigated by the support available from faculty and fellow students. It has taught me that I am never isolated and how to find joy despite pressures like exams and deadlines.
