Nearly a year ago, in October 2022, I felt apprehensive and uncertain about what lay ahead. I was on the verge of starting my journey in Materials Science and Engineering as a new student. Venturing into the unknown was not something my previously reserved self was familiar with. Looking back now, I realize I have experienced a year full of personal development, challenges, and plenty of enjoyment! So, what insights have I gained this year, and where do I stand now?

One of the earliest and most intimidating obstacles was forming friendships. This is frequently one of the most daunting parts of beginning university, and if you are a prospective student, it may weigh heavily on your mind. On my initial day settling into my accommodation, just days prior to the start of term, I remained in my room all day, feeling too daunted to venture out and meet others. However, as of today, I can proudly say that I’ve developed some of the most meaningful friendships here at this university and within my program. I’ve found a second family at Imperial, and it all began with casual conversations with others in similar circumstances. So, what did I discover? I realized that taking risks at the start of the year is vital. If you aren’t quite ready or comfortable, don’t fret! There are many ice-breaking activities available to foster connections with others. I also found that being authentic is essential. With such a wide range of individuals throughout the course and university, you will surely encounter those you connect with.

Another hurdle was managing the coursework and its complexity. There was certainly a noticeable increase from A-levels, and in some respects, an even greater jump from the first term to the second. Being in such a competitive environment can be challenging for your self-esteem; you may observe others studying and feel less competent. What helped me was remembering that everyone faces similar circumstances. If you’re struggling to grasp something, I can almost assure you that others are experiencing the same challenge. Therefore, don’t hesitate to ask for assistance. This could be the most crucial lesson to take away from your first year. Seek help from classmates and faculty!

This brings me to my next point. The faculty in Materials are outstanding. They genuinely want to see you thrive and are aware of the challenges students encounter. They show understanding and maintain ongoing communication throughout the year regarding our issues. I didn’t fully take advantage of the support services until late in the year, but I wish I had done so earlier. I mentioned taking risks previously – I took one by becoming a year wellbeing representative. This position allowed me to connect with the faculty, which is invaluable. There are multiple ways to engage with faculty, and it’s one of the best actions you can take for yourself! My main lesson from this aspect of university is to utilize the support available. You can never have too much assistance!

In summary, this year has demonstrated to me that feelings of anxiety before and during university are often baseless and can be eased with the various support systems provided by staff and fellow students. It has taught me that I am never alone and how to find enjoyment even amidst pressures like exams and deadlines.
