Ten months ago, in October 2022, I found myself feeling nervous and uncertain about what lay ahead. I was on the brink of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a first-year student. Venturing into the unfamiliar was not something my previously introverted and reserved self was accustomed to. Looking back now, I recognize a year brimming with personal development, hurdles, and countless enjoyable moments! So, what lessons has this year imparted, and what is my current standing?
One of the primary and most intimidating hurdles was forming friendships. This certainly ranks as one of the more daunting aspects of beginning university, and if you are reading this as a prospective student, it could be among your greatest worries. On my inaugural day of moving into my accommodation, a few days prior to the semester starting, I spent the whole day nestled in my room, too daunted to step outside and introduce myself to anyone. Today, however, I can wholeheartedly assert that I’ve created some of the finest friendships I’ve ever had, here at this university and on this course. I’ve established a second family at Imperial, all initiated through casual conversations with those in comparable situations. So, what have I gleaned? I discovered that it’s always beneficial to take a chance at the beginning of the year. If you feel unprepared or uneasy, fret not! There will be a multitude of ice-breaker opportunities and events designed to help you connect with others. I also realized that if you can embody one quality, it should be authenticity. With such a diverse array of individuals throughout the course and university, you’re sure to encounter those who resonate with you.
Another obstacle was managing the workload and complexity of the material. There was undeniably a leap from A-levels, and in certain respects, an even larger leap from the first term to the second. Being thrust into such a scenario doesn’t always bolster your confidence; you may observe peers studying and feel inadequate. Several elements aided me in overcoming that sensation, one being the reassurance that everyone is navigating similar challenges. If you find something baffling, I can nearly guarantee that there are others who are equally puzzled. So, don’t hesitate to seek assistance. This may be the most crucial lesson to grasp in your first year. Seek help from your fellow students and the faculty!
This leads me to my following observation. The staff in the Materials department are outstanding. They genuinely wish for your success and acknowledge that students encounter difficulties. They show empathy towards students and maintain consistent communication with us throughout the year regarding our challenges. I didn’t really utilize the pastoral support until the conclusion of the year, but I wish I had engaged with it sooner. Earlier, I mentioned taking leaps – I did take one at the year’s start by becoming a well-being representative for my year. This role enabled me to connect with the staff members, which is exceedingly beneficial. There are numerous avenues to familiarize yourself with staff, and it truly is one of the best favors you can do for yourself! My key takeaway from this facet of university life is to seize the opportunities for help that are being offered. You can never have too much support!
In summary, this year has illuminated the fact that feelings of anxiety, both pre-university and during, are frequently unfounded and can be eased with the support systems available from faculty and fellow students. It has taught me that I am never alone, and it has demonstrated how to relish experiences amid stressors like exams and deadlines.
