Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty about what lay ahead. I was poised to start my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Venturing into the unfamiliar was not something my previously shy and introverted self was used to. Reflecting on this past year, I recognize a journey of personal development, obstacles, and a great deal of enjoyment! So, what insights have I gained this year, and what is my current status?
One of the initial and most formidable challenges was forming friendships. This is typically one of the most intimidating parts of beginning university, and if you are a future student, it might be one of your top anxieties. On my first day of settling into my accommodation, a few days prior to the term commencing, I spent the whole day concealed in my room, too daunted to venture out and meet new people. Now, I can confidently assert that I’ve forged some of the strongest friendships I’ve ever experienced, here at this institution and in this course. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all initiated with casual conversations with others in identical situations. So, what did I absorb? I realized that taking a chance at the start of the year is always advantageous. If you’re not prepared or at ease, don’t fret! There will be numerous ice-breaking chances and events to facilitate your connections with others. I also discerned that if you can embody one thing, be authentic. With so many varied individuals throughout the course and university, you’re sure to encounter others like yourself.
Another obstacle was the amount of work and the complexity of the material. There was undoubtedly a leap from A-levels, and in some respects, an even greater leap from the first term to the second. Being thrust into such an atmosphere isn’t always beneficial for your self-esteem; you might observe others studying and feel insufficient. A few strategies assisted me through that feeling, one being the reminder that everyone is navigating the same challenges. If you don’t grasp something, I can almost assure you that many others don’t either. Hence, seek assistance. This may be the most crucial lesson to grasp in the first year. Don’t hesitate to ask for help from your classmates and the faculty!
This leads me to my next observation. The faculty in Materials are outstanding. They are dedicated to your success and recognize that students face challenges. They relate to students and keep open lines of communication with us throughout the year regarding our concerns. I didn’t effectively utilize the pastoral support until the end of the year, but I wish I had started earlier. I alluded to taking risks before – I took one at the beginning of the year by becoming a year well-being representative. This role allowed me to connect with staff members, which is extremely beneficial. There are numerous avenues to engage with faculty, and it’s certainly one of the most advantageous decisions you can make for yourself! My primary lesson from this segment of university life is to capitalize on the assistance being provided. You can never receive too much!
Overall, this year has imparted to me that feelings of anxiety, both in anticipation of and during university, are nearly always unfounded and can be mitigated through the variety of support options offered by faculty and fellow students. It has shown me that I am never solitary, and it has taught me how to have fun alongside stressors like exams and deadlines.
