Approximately ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty regarding the future. I was on the verge of commencing my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a first-year student. Venturing into the unknown was not something my previously introverted and reserved self was familiar with. Upon reflection, I now recognize a year filled with personal development, obstacles, and a great deal of enjoyment! But what insights have I gained this year, and what is my current standing?
One of the most significant and intimidating hurdles I faced was forming friendships. This is undeniably one of the more daunting aspects of beginning university, and if you’re a prospective student reading this, it could be a significant worry for you. On my first day moving into my accommodation, a few days prior to the semester commencing, I spent the whole day concealed in my room, too fearful to venture out and meet others. However, sitting here today, I can assert that I’ve forged some of the finest friendships I’ve ever had, both at this university and within this course. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all initiated with casual conversations with individuals in comparable situations. So, what have I learned? I’ve discovered that it’s always beneficial to take the plunge at the beginning of the year. If you’re feeling unprepared or uneasy, don’t fret! There will be numerous ice-breaker chances and events to facilitate connections with others. I also discovered that if you can embody one quality, it’s to be yourself. With such a diverse array of individuals across the course and university, you’re certain to encounter those who resonate with you.
Another obstacle was the intensity of the workload and the challenging content. There was certainly a significant transition from A-levels, and in some instances, an even greater leap from the first term to the second. Being placed in such an environment can be challenging to your confidence; you may observe others studying and feel less competent. A few strategies assisted me in overcoming that feeling, one being the reminder that everyone is facing similar challenges. If you’re struggling to comprehend something, I can nearly assure you that there are others who are equally confused. So, don’t hesitate to seek assistance. This might be the most critical lesson to embrace in the first year. Reach out for help from your colleagues and the staff!
This leads me to my following point. The faculty in Materials are incredible. They genuinely want you to succeed and recognize that students encounter difficulties. They relate to students and sustain ongoing communication with us throughout the year regarding our challenges. I didn’t truly utilize the pastoral support until the conclusion of the year, but I wish I had taken advantage of it earlier. I mentioned earlier about taking leaps – I did take a significant step at the beginning of the year by becoming a year well-being representative. This role enabled me to familiarize myself with the faculty members, which is immensely beneficial. There are numerous avenues to get acquainted with the staff, and it’s undoubtedly one of the best actions you can take for your personal growth! My primary insight from this aspect of university is to capitalize on the resources and assistance available to you. You can never have an excess of support!
In summary, this year has illustrated to me that feelings of nervousness, both prior to and during university, are often baseless and can be eased with the multitude of support options provided by faculty and fellow students. It has taught me that I am never isolated, and it has shown me how to have fun despite stressors such as exams and deadlines.
