Ten months prior, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty about what was to come as I embarked on my journey in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Immersing myself in the unknown was not something my previously shy and introverted self was accustomed to. Looking back now, I recognize a year filled with personal development, challenges, and enjoyment! But what insights have I gained, and what is my current standing?
One of the initial and most intimidating hurdles was forming friendships. This is frequently one of the most daunting aspects of beginning university, and if you are an incoming student, it might be a significant worry. On my initial day settling into my accommodation, just days before classes commenced, I spent the entire day concealed in my room, too apprehensive to step out and socialize. However, today I can proudly say I’ve established some of the finest friendships here at university and within my course. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, all stemming from initiating small dialogues with individuals in comparable positions. So, what have I discovered? I realized that it’s advantageous to take a chance at the outset of the year. If you’re not entirely prepared or at ease, don’t fret! There will be countless ice-breaker events and activities to assist you in connecting with others. I also recognized that being authentic is essential. With such a diverse array of individuals across the course and university, you’re sure to find those who resonate with you.
Another challenge was the volume of work and the complexity of the content. There was undeniably a noticeable leap from A-levels, and in some respects, an even larger transition from the first term to the second. Being among such an atmosphere can influence your self-esteem; you may observe others studying and feel insufficient. What got me through was the realization that everyone is facing the same challenges. If you’re struggling to grasp a concept, I can almost assure you that others are as well. Therefore, seek assistance. This might be the most crucial lesson to absorb in the first year. Reach out for help from classmates and faculty!
This leads me to my subsequent point. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely want you to thrive and are aware of the challenges students encounter. They show empathy towards us and keep open lines of communication throughout the year concerning our concerns. I didn’t take advantage of the pastoral support until late in the year, but I wish I had utilized it sooner. I mentioned earlier about taking risks – I embraced one by becoming a well-being representative for the year. This position enabled me to connect with the staff, which is immensely beneficial. There are numerous ways to engage with faculty, and it is one of the best actions you can take for your benefit! My primary takeaway from this aspect of university is to leverage the assistance provided. You can never receive too much!
In summary, this year has taught me that feelings of nervousness, whether leading up to or during university, are frequently baseless and can be eased by the various support resources available from faculty and fellow students. It has shown me that I am never alone and how to find joy despite pressures such as exams and deadlines.
