Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)

Around ten months back, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty regarding the future. I was on the verge of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Venturing into the unfamiliar was not something my previously timid and reserved self was used to. Looking back on the past academic year, I recognize it as a phase of personal development, hurdles, and a lot of enjoyment! But what insights have I gained, and what is my current situation?

One of the first and most intimidating obstacles was forging friendships. This often ranks as one of the most frightening elements of beginning university, and if you’re an incoming student, it might be among your top concerns. On the day I moved into my residence, a few days ahead of the start of classes, I spent the whole day tucked away in my room, too scared to go out and meet others. Today, I can proudly say I’ve forged some of the best friendships of my life right here at this university and in this program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all began with casual conversations with individuals in similar circumstances. So, what did I discover? I learned that taking a chance at the beginning of the year is always beneficial. If you don’t feel prepared or at ease, don’t fret! There will be numerous ice-breaker events and opportunities to help you connect with others. I also realized that if you can embody one thing, be yourself. With such a diverse group of people in the course and university, you’re sure to meet like-minded peers.

Another hurdle was the intensity of the workload and the difficulty of the material. There was certainly an increase from A-levels, and in some aspects, an even larger jump from the first term to the second. Being placed in such an environment can be challenging for your self-esteem; you may observe others studying and feel subpar. A few strategies helped me navigate through that feeling, one being the reminder that everyone shares the same experience. If you’re struggling to grasp something, I can almost assure you that others are too. Therefore, don’t hesitate to seek assistance. This may be the most crucial lesson to absorb during your first year. Reach out for help from your peers and the faculty!

This leads me to my next observation. The faculty in Materials is exceptional. They are invested in your success and recognize that students encounter difficulties. They show empathy towards students and maintain ongoing communication with us regarding our concerns throughout the year. I didn’t fully leverage the pastoral support until the end of the year, but I regret not doing so sooner. I mentioned taking chances earlier – I took one at the start of the year by becoming a well-being representative for my year. This position enabled me to build connections with the staff members, which is incredibly beneficial. There are numerous ways to engage with the faculty, and it’s one of the most advantageous steps you can take for yourself! My key takeaway from this aspect of university is to make the most of the support available. You can never have too much!

In summary, this year has shown me that feelings of nervousness, both prior to and during university, are frequently unfounded and can be eased by the wide array of support available from staff and fellow students. It has taught me that I’m never alone and how to find enjoyment even amidst pressures like exams and deadlines.
