Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, apprehension, and uncertainty regarding the future. I was about to embark on my journey in Materials Science and Engineering as a first-year student. Venturing into the unknown was not something my previously timid and reserved self was used to. Looking back, I perceive a year filled with personal development, challenges, and a great deal of enjoyment! But what have I gained this year, and what is my current state?

One of the first and most intimidating obstacles was forging friendships. This can be one of the most daunting parts of starting university, and if you’re reading this as a future student, it may be one of your greatest worries. On my initial day of moving into my residence, a few days prior to the term starting, I spent the entire day sequestered in my room, too apprehensive to venture out and introduce myself. However, sitting here today, I can assert with confidence that I have made some of the best friends I’ve ever had, both at this university and in this program. I’ve discovered a second family here at Imperial, and it all began with some casual conversation with others in similar situations. So, what did I take away from this? I learned that it’s crucial to take a chance at the beginning of the year. If you don’t feel prepared or at ease, that’s perfectly fine! There will be numerous ice-breaker events and opportunities to help you connect with others. I also realized that if you can embody one quality, be yourself. With such a diverse group of individuals across the course and university, you are certain to find others like you.

An additional challenge was the workload and the complexity of the content. There was certainly a leap from A-levels, and in some aspects, an even steeper leap from the first term to the second. Being thrust into such a setting can be detrimental to your confidence; you might observe others studying and feel insufficient. A few elements helped me navigate through that sensation, one being the reminder that everyone is facing similar challenges. If something is unclear, I can nearly guarantee that others are confused as well. Therefore, don’t hesitate to seek assistance. This might be the most crucial lesson to learn in the first year. Reach out to your peers and the faculty!

This leads me to my subsequent point. The staff in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely want you to thrive and recognize that students encounter difficulties. They show understanding towards students and maintain ongoing communication regarding our challenges throughout the year. I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support until the year’s end, but I wish I had done so earlier. I mentioned taking chances before – I took one at the year’s onset by becoming a year well-being representative. This role enabled me to connect with the staff members, which is immensely beneficial. There are numerous ways to familiarize yourself with the staff, and it is one of the best decisions you can make for yourself! My main lesson from this aspect of university life is to make the most of the available support. You can never acquire too much!

In summary, this year has shown me that feelings of nervousness, both prior to and during university, are often baseless and can be diminished with the multitude of support resources provided by staff and fellow students. It has proven to me that I am never isolated and how to find enjoyment even amidst stressors like exams and deadlines.
