Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)

Nearly a year ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, trepidation, and uncertainty about what lay ahead. I was on the verge of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Venturing into the unknown was not something my formerly timid and reserved self was used to. Looking back now, I recognize a year filled with personal development, obstacles, and plenty of enjoyment! So, what insights have I gained this year, and what is my current status?

One of the first and most intimidating hurdles was forming friendships. This is frequently one of the most daunting components of commencing university, and if you’re an incoming student, it may rank among your top worries. On my initial day moving into my residence, a few days prior to the start of classes, I barricaded myself in my room all day, too daunted to venture out and meet others. However, now, I can assertively state that I have forged some of the finest friendships I’ve ever experienced, here at this university and within my program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all kicked off with casual conversations with folks in similar circumstances. So, what did I grasp? I discovered that taking a chance at the year’s outset is always advantageous. If you’re not fully prepared or at ease, fret not! Numerous ice-breaker events and occasions will assist you in connecting with others. I also found that being true to yourself is essential. With such a diverse array of individuals throughout the program and university, you’re sure to encounter those who resonate with you.

Another obstacle was the workload and the complexity of the material. There was certainly a noticeable increase from A-levels, and in some instances, an even more significant jump from the first term to the second. Being thrown into such a setting can challenge your confidence; you may observe others studying and feel inadequate. Several factors helped me navigate this sentiment, one being the reminder that everyone is in a similar situation. If something is unclear to you, I can nearly assure you that there are others who feel the same. So, don’t hesitate to seek assistance. This might be the most important lesson to grasp in the first year. Reach out for support from your classmates and the faculty!

This leads me to my next observation. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely want you to thrive and are aware of the challenges students encounter. They show understanding toward students and maintain regular communication with us throughout the year concerning our concerns. I didn’t fully leverage the pastoral support until the year’s end, but I wish I had done so earlier. I mentioned previously about taking chances – I also took one at the year’s beginning by becoming a year well-being representative. This position enabled me to connect with the faculty, which is immensely beneficial. There are numerous methods to familiarize yourself with the faculty, and it is undoubtedly one of the best choices you can make for yourself! My key takeaway from this aspect of university is to make the most of the assistance provided. You can never have too much!

In summary, this year has shown me that feelings of nervousness, both prior to and during university, are frequently baseless and can be mitigated with the various support resources available from the faculty and fellow students. It has taught me that I’m never alone and how to find enjoyment alongside the pressures of exams and deadlines.
