By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)
Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty regarding what was ahead. I was about to embark on my journey in Materials Science and Engineering as a first-year student. Facing the unfamiliar was not something my previously shy and introverted self was used to. Looking back, I recognize a year abundant with personal development, obstacles, and a lot of enjoyment! But what insights has this year provided, and what is my current position?
One of the initial and most intimidating hurdles was forming friendships. This is frequently one of the most daunting aspects of beginning university, and if you’re a potential student reading this, it might be a significant worry for you. On my first day moving into my accommodation, a few days ahead of the term starting, I spent the whole day sequestered in my room, too daunted to venture out and meet others. Today, however, I can proudly say I’ve formed some of the best friendships here at this university and within this course. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, all beginning with casual conversations with individuals in similar situations. So, what did I take away from this experience? I learned that taking a step forward at the onset of the year is always advantageous. If you’re not fully prepared or at ease, don’t fret! There will be plenty of ice-breaking events and activities to facilitate connections with others. I also discovered that being authentic is essential. With such a variety of individuals throughout the course and university, you’re sure to find people who resonate with you.
Another challenge was the intensity of the workload and the complexity of the material. There was definitely an increase from A-levels, and in certain respects, an even greater jump from the first term to the second. Being placed in such a setting can be taxing on your self-esteem; you might observe others studying and feel inadequate. A few things assisted me in overcoming that feeling, one being the reassurance that everyone is navigating the same challenges. If you don’t grasp a concept, I can almost assure you that others don’t as well. So, don’t hesitate to seek assistance. This may be the most critical lesson to absorb in the first year. Reach out to your colleagues and the faculty!
This transitions me to my next point. The faculty in Materials is exceptional. They genuinely desire for you to thrive and comprehend the challenges students encounter. They understand students’ experiences and maintain ongoing communication with us throughout the year regarding our concerns. I didn’t fully leverage the pastoral support until the year’s end, but I wish I had taken advantage of it earlier. I mentioned earlier about taking risks – I did take one at the beginning of the year by becoming a year well-being representative. This position enabled me to connect with the staff members, which is immensely valuable. There are numerous avenues to get acquainted with staff, and it’s undoubtedly one of the best decisions you can make for yourself! My primary takeaway from this aspect of university is to fully utilize the support available. You can never have too much!
In summary, this year has shown me that feelings of anxiety, both before and during university, are frequently baseless and can be mitigated with the support options available from faculty and fellow students. It has demonstrated to me that I’m never alone and how to relish my time despite pressures like exams and deadlines.
