Ten months prior, in October 2022, I felt anxious, fearful, and uncertain about what lay ahead. I was on the brink of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a first-year student. Diving into the unknown wasn’t something my once shy and reserved self was familiar with. Reflecting now, I see a year filled with personal development, obstacles, and a lot of joy! But what lessons has this year imparted, and where do I find myself today?
One of the initial and most intimidating challenges was forming friendships. This is certainly one of the more daunting facets of commencing university, and if you’re viewing this as a potential student, it may be one of your top concerns. On my first day settling into my accommodation, a few days before classes began, I spent the entire day sequestered in my room because I felt too nervous to venture out and greet people. Sitting here today, however, I can proudly assert that I’ve forged some of the best friendships I’ve ever experienced, here at this university and within this program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and all it required was engaging in casual conversations with others in similar situations. So, what did I discover? I learned that taking a leap at the onset of the year is always worthwhile. If you don’t feel prepared or at ease, don’t fret! There will be numerous opportunities for ice-breaking and events to facilitate connections with others. I also learned that if you can embody one thing, be authentic. With such a diverse group of individuals across the course and university, you’re sure to find people who resonate with you.
An additional challenge was the volume of work and the complexity of the material. There was undoubtedly a shift from A-levels, and in certain respects, an even steeper transition from the first term to the second. Being thrust into such an environment isn’t always kind to your self-esteem; you might observe others studying and feel inadequate. Several factors aided me in overcoming that sentiment, one being the realization that everyone is navigating similar challenges. If you don’t grasp a concept, I can nearly promise that others are experiencing the same struggle. So, seek assistance. This may be the single most crucial lesson to embrace in your first year. Reach out for support from your classmates and the faculty!
This leads me to my subsequent point. The faculty in Materials are outstanding. They genuinely want you to succeed and recognize that students face difficulties. They show understanding towards students and maintain open lines of communication with us throughout the year regarding our concerns. I didn’t truly utilize the pastoral support until the year’s end, but I wish I had done so earlier. I mentioned earlier about taking leaps – I did take a step at the beginning of the year by becoming a year well-being representative. This role allowed me to connect with the faculty members, which is incredibly beneficial. There are numerous avenues to engage with staff, and it’s certainly one of the most advantageous things you can do for yourself! My primary takeaway from this part of university is to leverage the support being provided to you. You can never have too much of it!
Overall, this year has taught me that feelings of nervousness, both prior to and during university, are nearly always unfounded and can be alleviated through the wealth of support available from faculty and fellow students. It has shown me that I am never alone, and it has taught me how to find enjoyment even amidst stressors like exams and deadlines.
