By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)

Nearly a year ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty regarding what lay ahead. I was on the verge of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Stepping into the unknown was not something my previously introverted and timid self was used to. Looking back on the past academic year, I recognize a path of personal development, obstacles, and a lot of enjoyment! But what insights have I gained, and what is my current situation?

One of the first and most intimidating hurdles was forming friendships. This is frequently one of the most daunting elements of beginning university, and if you’re a future student, it may be a significant worry for you. On my initial day moving into my dorm, a few days prior to classes starting, I spent the whole day secluded in my room, too daunted to go out and meet others. However, I can now confidently state that I have formed some wonderful friendships here at university and in my program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, all through striking up casual conversations with others in similar circumstances. So, what did I gain from this experience? I learned that it’s always advantageous to take a chance at the start of the year. If you’re not completely prepared or at ease, don’t fret! There will be numerous ice-breaker events to assist you in connecting with others. I also realized that being true to yourself is essential. With so many varied individuals in the program and university, you’re sure to find those who share your mindset.

Another obstacle I faced was the demands of the coursework and the complexity of the material. There was definitely a noticeable increase from A-levels, and in some respects, an even greater challenge transitioning from the first to the second term. Being plunged into such a setting can take a toll on your self-esteem; you may observe others studying and feel inadequate. What supported me through this was the understanding that everyone is facing similar challenges. If something isn’t clear to you, I can almost guarantee that others are confused as well. So, don’t hesitate to ask for assistance. This might be the most vital skill to cultivate during your first year. Reach out to both classmates and instructors!

This leads me to my next point. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely want to see you succeed and comprehend the challenges students encounter. They resonate with our experiences and keep an open line of communication throughout the year about our issues. I didn’t leverage the pastoral support until the year’s end, but I wish I had done so earlier. I mentioned taking chances previously – I took one by becoming a year well-being representative. This position helped me connect with the faculty, which is invaluable. There are numerous ways to engage with the faculty, and it’s one of the best things you can do for your well-being! My primary lesson from this aspect of university is to fully utilize the support that is available. You can never have too much!

In summary, this year has shown me that feelings of nervousness, both prior to and during university, are often unfounded and can be mitigated with the abundant support available from faculty and fellow students. I’ve realized that I’m never alone, and I’ve learned how to find joy even amidst pressures such as exams and deadlines.
