Ten months prior, in October 2022, I felt anxious, frightened, and uncertain about what lay ahead. I was on the verge of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Venturing into the unknown was not something my formerly shy and reserved self was used to. Looking back now, I recognize a year brimming with personal development, hurdles, and ample enjoyment! But what insights have I gained this year, and where do I stand now?
One of the initial and most intimidating challenges was forging friendships. This is frequently one of the most daunting facets of commencing university life, and if you’re contemplating this journey, it may rank high on your list of concerns. On my first day moving into my accommodation, just days before the term began, I spent all day sequestered in my room, too daunted to venture out and introduce myself to others. Today, however, I can assertively state that I’ve formed some of the finest friendships I’ve ever had at this university and within this course. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all commenced with casual conversations with others in similar circumstances. So, what was my takeaway? I learned that it’s crucial to take a leap at the beginning of the year. If you’re not feeling ready or secure, don’t fret! Numerous ice-breaking opportunities and events will assist you in connecting with peers. I also realized that if you can embody one thing, it should be your true self. With a diverse array of individuals across the course and university, you are sure to encounter those who resonate with you.
Another obstacle was the intensity of the workload and the complexity of the content. There was definitely a leap from A-levels, and in certain respects, an even more substantial leap from the first term to the second. Being thrust into such an environment can sometimes be challenging for your confidence; you might observe others studying and feel inadequate. A few strategies aided me through those feelings, one being the reminder that everyone is navigating the same journey. If you don’t grasp something, I can nearly assure you there are others who also find it perplexing. So, seek assistance. This might be the most vital lesson to adopt in your first year. Reach out for help from both your peers and the faculty!
This leads me to my following point. The staff in Materials are incredible. They are genuinely invested in your success and recognize that students face challenges. They empathize with us and engage in continuous communication throughout the year regarding our concerns. I didn’t fully utilize pastoral support until the year’s end, but I regret not doing so earlier. I referred to taking leaps at the start; I did embrace one by becoming a year well-being representative. This role enabled me to connect with the staff members, which is immensely beneficial. There are numerous ways to engage with the staff, and it’s undoubtedly one of the most advantageous actions you can take for yourself! My primary learning from this aspect of university is to capitalize on the support available to you. You can never have too much!
In summary, this year has shown me that feelings of nervousness, both prior to and during university, are frequently unfounded and can be mitigated with the various support resources accessible from staff and fellow students. It has taught me that I’m never isolated and how to have fun while managing stressors like exams and submission deadlines.
