Nearly a year ago, in October 2022, I was feeling anxious, fearful, and uncertain about what lay ahead. I was about to embark on my journey in Materials Science and Engineering as a newcomer to university. Venturing into unfamiliar territory was not something my previously shy and reserved self was used to. Looking back now, I recognize a year brimming with personal development, obstacles, and plenty of enjoyment! But what insights have I gained this year, and where do I stand now?

One of the initial and most intimidating hurdles I encountered was establishing friendships. This is undoubtedly one of the more nerve-wracking elements of starting university, and if you’re reading this as someone considering enrollment, it might be one of your primary worries. On my first day of moving into my residence, a few days prior to the term’s commencement, I spent the entire day sequestered in my room, too daunted to venture out and meet others. Sitting here today, however, I can assertively say that I’ve forged some of the best friendships I’ve ever had, right here at this university and in this program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all began with engaging in small talk with fellow students in similar situations. So, what did I come to understand? I realized that it’s always wise to take a chance at the beginning of the year. If you don’t feel entirely prepared or at ease, don’t fret! There will be numerous ice-breaking occasions and events designed to facilitate connections with others. I also found that if you can choose to be anything, be yourself. There are so many diverse individuals throughout the program and university; you’re sure to encounter others like you.

Another obstacle was the workload and the complexity of the content. There was certainly an increase compared to A-levels, and in some aspects, an even greater leap from the first term to the second. Being thrust into such an environment isn’t always beneficial for your self-esteem; you may observe others studying and feel inadequate. A few strategies aided me in overcoming that sentiment, one being the realization that everyone is facing similar challenges. If something isn’t clear to you, I can nearly guarantee that there are at least a handful of others who feel the same way. Therefore, don’t hesitate to seek assistance. This may be the single most essential lesson to grasp in your first year. Reach out for support from both your classmates and the faculty!

This naturally leads me to my next point. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely want you to succeed and recognize that students encounter difficulties. They relate to students and maintain ongoing communication with us throughout the year regarding our concerns. I didn’t fully utilize the supportive resources until later in the year, but I wish I had done so earlier. I mentioned earlier about taking leaps – I did take one at the beginning of the year by becoming a year well-being representative. This role enabled me to familiarize myself with the faculty members, which is incredibly beneficial. There are numerous opportunities to connect with staff, and it’s certainly one of the best actions you can take for your benefit! My primary takeaway from this aspect of university is to capitalize on the assistance available to you. You can never have too much support!

On a larger scale, this year has imparted the lesson that feelings of nervousness, both prior to and during university, are nearly always without basis and can be mitigated by the abundant support options provided by staff and fellow students. It has taught me that I’m never alone, and it has shown me how to find enjoyment even alongside stressful factors such as exams and deadlines.
