Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)

Ten months back, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with apprehension, anxiety, and uncertainty about what lay ahead. I was on the brink of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a newcomer. Diving into the unfamiliar was not something my previously timid and reserved nature was used to. Looking back now, I recognize a year filled with personal development, hurdles, and a lot of enjoyment! So, what insights has this year provided, and what’s my current position?

One of the primary and most intimidating hurdles was establishing friendships. This is frequently one of the most daunting parts of commencing university, and if you are a future student, it could be a significant worry for you. On my first day of moving into accommodation, a few days before classes started, I spent the entire day tucked away in my room, too daunted to venture out and meet others. However, sitting here now, I can assertively say I’ve formed some of the finest friendships I’ve ever had, both within this university and my program. I’ve discovered a second family here at Imperial, and it all began with light conversations with others in similar circumstances. So, what did I discover? I found that taking a bold step at the beginning of the year is always advantageous. If you don’t feel prepared or at ease, don’t fret! There will be numerous ice-breaker activities to assist you in connecting with others. I also learned that being your authentic self is essential. With the plethora of diverse individuals throughout the course and university, you’re sure to encounter others like you.

An additional challenge was the intensity of the workload and the complexity of the material. There was undoubtedly a significant increase from A-levels, and in some respects, an even more considerable leap from the first term to the second. Being in such an environment can weigh heavily on your self-esteem; you might observe others studying and feel inferior. A few strategies assisted me in overcoming this feeling, one being the reminder that everyone is navigating similar waters. If you’re struggling to grasp something, I can nearly assure you others are too. Therefore, don’t hesitate to seek assistance. This might be the most vital skill to cultivate in your first year. Reach out for support from classmates and faculty!

This brings me to my next point. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely desire for you to thrive and comprehend the challenges students endure. They relate and keep open lines of communication with us throughout the year regarding our issues. I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral assistance until the conclusion of the year, but I wish I had done so earlier. I mentioned earlier about taking leaps – I made one at the beginning of the year by becoming a well-being representative for my year. This position allowed me to connect with the staff, which is incredibly beneficial. There are numerous avenues to engage with staff, and it’s one of the best decisions you can make for yourself! My key takeaway from this aspect of university is to make the most of the support available. You can never have too much of it!

Ultimately, this year has shown me that anxious feelings, both before and during university, are often misplaced and can be eased with the various support resources from faculty and fellow students. It has taught me that I am never alone and how to find joy even amid pressures like exams and deadlines.
