Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)

Approximately ten months ago, in October 2022, I felt apprehensive and uncertain about what lay ahead as I geared up to embark on my journey in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Embracing the unfamiliar was not what my formerly reserved self was used to. Looking back on the previous academic year, I recognize a path of personal development, obstacles, and enjoyment. But what insights have I gathered, and what is my current standing?

A primary and intimidating hurdle was the process of making friends. This is often a major worry for new university students, and I was no exception. On the inaugural day at my accommodation, just prior to the commencement of classes, I remained in my room the entire day, too apprehensive to step out and engage with others. Today, I can proudly state that I’ve cultivated some of the finest friendships here at the university and within my course. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all originated with casual conversations with peers who were in similar situations. The essential lesson? It’s beneficial to take a chance at the onset of the year. If you aren’t quite ready, don’t fret—numerous ice-breaker activities will be available to aid you in connecting with others. Keep in mind, just be yourself, and you will encounter people who align with you.

Another significant challenge was juggling the workload and comprehending the intricate material. The shift from A-levels was substantial, and the transition from the first to the second term was even more pronounced. In such an environment, it’s easy to question your capabilities, particularly when you find yourself comparing against others. What assisted me was the realization that everyone else is navigating similar waters. If you’re struggling with something, it’s likely that others are too. Therefore, don’t hesitate to ask for assistance. This might be the most vital lesson for first-year students—actively seek support from both peers and faculty!

On this note, I would like to emphasize how remarkable the staff in the Materials department are. They genuinely want students to thrive and acknowledge the challenges we encounter. They maintain open lines of communication throughout the year concerning any concerns. I regret not fully utilizing the pastoral support until later in the year. By stepping up as a year well-being representative, I created connections with staff—a resourceful opportunity. Numerous avenues exist to familiarize yourself with the staff, and engaging with them is one of the best actions you can take for yourself. My primary takeaway is to make the most of the available support. You can never receive too much assistance!

In summary, this year has illuminated for me that the anxieties felt before university and those within it are frequently baseless and can be eased with the support provided by staff and fellow students. I’ve learned that I’m never in solitude and how to find joy amidst the stresses of exams and deadlines.
