Back in October 2022, ten months ago, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, trepidation, and uncertainty regarding my future. I was on the verge of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a newcomer. Venturing into the unfamiliar was not something my formerly shy and introverted nature was used to. Looking back now, I recognize a year filled with personal development, obstacles, and a great deal of enjoyment! But what insights have I gained this year, and what is my current situation?

One of the foremost and most intimidating hurdles was forming friendships. This often ranks as one of the most daunting aspects of entering university, and for prospective students, it can be a significant worry. On my first day moving into my residence, mere days before classes commenced, I remained in my room all day, too daunted to step out and meet others. However, today I can proudly state that I have forged some of the best friendships here at university and in my program. I have discovered a second family at Imperial, which all began with casual conversations with others in similar predicaments. So, what did I take away from this? It’s essential to take the plunge at the beginning of the year. If you don’t feel primed or at ease, don’t fret! There will be plenty of ice-breaking activities to assist you in connecting with your peers. I also realized that being authentic is crucial. With such a varied group of individuals across the program and the university, you are sure to find those who connect with you.

Another challenge was the intensity of the coursework and the difficulty of the material. There was certainly a jump from A-levels, and an even more significant jump from the first to the second term. Being in such a setting can test your self-assurance; you might observe others studying and feel insufficient. What aided me was the reminder that everyone is experiencing similar challenges. If you don’t grasp something, others probably don’t either. Therefore, don’t hesitate to seek assistance. This may be the most vital skill to nurture in your first year. Reach out to both your classmates and faculty!

Speaking of faculty, the Materials department is exceptional. They genuinely want you to thrive and comprehend the difficulties that students encounter. They show empathy and maintain ongoing communication regarding our concerns. I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support until later in the year, but I wish I had done so earlier. I spoke of taking leaps earlier – I took one by serving as a year well-being representative. This position enabled me to engage with faculty, which is immensely beneficial. There are numerous ways to familiarize yourself with faculty members, and it’s one of the finest things you can do for yourself! My key takeaway is to fully utilize the support that is available. You can never have an excess of it!

All in all, this year has taught me that anxious sentiments about university are frequently unfounded and can be eased with the assistance offered by faculty and fellow students. I’ve come to know that I’m never truly alone and have learned how to find joy even amidst pressures like examinations and deadlines.
