Ten months earlier, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty about what lay ahead. I was on the verge of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Embracing the unknown was not something my previously timid and introverted self was used to. Upon reflecting now, I recognize a year filled with personal development, obstacles, and a great deal of enjoyment! So, what insights have I gained, and what is my current status?
One of the first and most intimidating hurdles was forming friendships. This is undoubtedly one of the more daunting elements of commencing university, and if you’re a future student reading this, it may be one of your greatest worries. On my initial day of moving into my accommodation, a few days prior to the term starting, I spent the whole day cloistered in my room, too daunted to exit and introduce myself to others. However, today, I can assert with confidence that I’ve forged some of the best friendships I’ve ever experienced here at university and within this course. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, all beginning with engaging in small talk with those in similar situations. So, what did I discover? I realized that taking a leap at the beginning of the year is always advantageous. If you don’t feel prepared or at ease, don’t be concerned! Numerous ice-breaker activities and events will assist you in connecting with others. I also understood that if you can embody one thing, be your authentic self. With such a diverse array of individuals across the course and university, you are sure to encounter those who resonate with you.
Another challenge was handling the workload and the complexity of the content. There was certainly a leap from A-levels, and in some respects, an even greater leap from the first term to the second. Being thrust into such an environment can sometimes challenge your confidence; you may observe others studying and feel insufficient. A few strategies helped me cope with this sentiment, one being the reminder that everyone is navigating the same challenges. If something is unclear to you, I can almost assure you that others are feeling the same. So, don’t hesitate to seek assistance. This might be the most crucial lesson to learn in your first year. Reach out for support from your classmates and the faculty!
This brings me to my next point. The faculty in Materials are outstanding. They genuinely want you to thrive and recognize that students encounter difficulties. They empathize with us and keep open lines of communication throughout the year regarding our concerns. I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support until the end of the year, but I wish I had started earlier. I referred to taking leaps previously – I took one at the beginning of the year by becoming a year well-being representative. This role enabled me to connect with the staff, which is immensely beneficial. There are various ways to engage with staff, and it stands as one of the best actions you can take for yourself! My main takeaway from this aspect of university is to capitalize on the support available. You can never receive too much help!
In summary, this year has demonstrated to me that feelings of nervousness, both prior to and during university, are frequently baseless and can be mitigated through the various support resources provided by staff and fellow students. It’s taught me that I’m never alone and how to find joy even amidst pressures like exams and deadlines.
