Nearly a year ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty about what lay ahead. I was preparing to start my journey in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Venturing into the unknown was not something my previously timid and introverted self was used to. Looking back now, I recognize a year filled with personal development, challenges, and plenty of enjoyment! But what insights have I gained from this year, and where do I stand now?
One of the first and most intimidating obstacles was forming friendships. This is undoubtedly one of the more daunting elements of beginning university, and if you’re a future student reading this, it might be what causes you the most worry. On my initial day of moving into my accommodation, just days before the term commenced, I spent the entire time in my room, too scared to venture out and meet others. Today, however, I can proudly state that I’ve made some of the greatest friends I’ve ever known at this university and in this program. I’ve discovered a second family here at Imperial, and it all commenced with casual conversations with others in similar situations. So, what did I discover? I learned that taking a risk at the beginning of the year is always rewarding. If you’re not quite ready or feel uneasy, don’t fret! There will be ample ice-breaker chances and events to assist you in connecting with others. I also discovered that if you’re going to be anything, be your true self. With an array of different individuals across the course and university, you’re sure to find like-minded people.
Another hurdle was the workload and the complexity of the material. There was certainly a noticeable increase compared to A-levels, and in some respects, an even more significant jump from the first term to the second. Being plunged into such an environment can challenge your confidence; you may observe others studying and feel insufficient. A few factors helped me overcome that sensation, one being the reminder that everyone is navigating the same journey. If you find something confusing, I can almost assure you there are others who feel the same. So, don’t hesitate to ask for assistance. This may be the single most crucial lesson to learn in your first year. Reach out to your peers and the faculty!
This leads me to my next point. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely want you to thrive and understand the challenges students experience. They relate to students and keep open lines of communication with us throughout the year regarding our concerns. I didn’t really make use of the pastoral support until year-end, but I wish I had utilized it earlier. I mentioned taking risks before – I took one at the start of the year by stepping up as a year well-being representative. This role helped me connect with the faculty, which is incredibly valuable. There are numerous methods to get acquainted with staff, and it is undoubtedly one of the best decisions you can make for yourself! My primary takeaway from this aspect of university life is to seize the opportunities for help that are available. You can never obtain too much support!
All in all, this year has shown me that anxious feelings, both prior to and during university, are often baseless and can be eased with the various support resources provided by faculty and fellow students. It has revealed to me that I’m never on my own and how to find joy even amidst pressures like exams and deadlines.
